1997-1998

About the Item

Kenny Scharf drawing 1998 (book drawing): 1990's Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf exhibition catalogue featuring a signed & inscribed Kenny Scharf drawing. Further background: In 1997, parallel to the Keith Haring retrospective at the Whitney Museum in New York, Lio Malca produced the show 'In Your Face'. This rare show featuring all 3 artists in one venue, took place in a townhouse across from the museum, including works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf. Malca inaugurated, with these 3 artists, what would become his specialty for the next decade and beyond. Hand-signed & inscribed by Kenny Scharf in black marker on the interior alongside a classic, hand-drawn Scharf character. Medium: Softcover exhibition catalogue with a signed & inscribed, 1998 hand-drawing by Kenny Scharf (interior first page). 80 pages. Year: 1997 (drawing dated 1998 by Scharf). Dimensions: 11.5 × 9.75 inches. Condition: Well-preserved signature and drawing. Small tear to reverse-side cover. Minor signs of handling. Good overall vintage condition. More on Kenny Scharf: Colorful, cartoonish faces and imagined creatures populate Kenny Scharf’s fantastical murals, paintings, sculptures, and installations. On Scharf’s canvases, these figures careen against one another, as well as galactic landscapes and still-life elements such as vases. The artist received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts. He found success in New York’s 1980s East Village art scene alongside Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, with whom he shared a mentor—Andy Warhol. Scharf has exhibited in New York, London, Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo, Milan, and Zürich. His work belongs in the collections of The Bass, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, among others. By Julian Schnabel
    Located in NEW YORK, NY
Signed Julian Schnabel 'Tableaux Tati Les Plus Bas Prix' catalog: Front cover is hand-signed (J.S.) and inscribed by Schnabel to the historic critic and downtown art scene fixture Edit Deak. Published on the occasion of Schnabel’s 1990 show at the Yvon Lambert Gallery, Paris - the paintings from this series, painted on “Vichy” fabric, inspired by the Parisian department store Tati, are reproduced along with an excerpt of a dialogue from the Wim Wenders movie Paris Texas. Medium: Offset printed exhibition catalog. Dimensions: 11 x 8.25 inches. Good overall vintage condition with the exception of some minor signs of handling and scattered finger prints on reverse cover. Hand signed (initialed J.S) and inscribed on front cover from an edition of unknown. About the artist: Julian Schnabel is a painter and filmmaker known as an integral member of the American Neo-Expressionists along with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Eric Fischl. Schnabel’s application of paint on massive canvases, use of unconventional materials such as broken plates, and representation of human figure(s) are hallmarks of his most famous works. “My paintings take up room, they make a stand. People will always react to that,” he said of his work. “Some people get inspired, others get offended. But, that's good. I like that.” Born on October 26, 1951 in Brooklyn, NY, Schnabel participated in the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in the late 1970s, after his public persona grew. The artist turned to feature-filmmaking in the 1990s with his film Basquiat (1996), an intimate fictionalized account of the life of his late friend. Schnabel went on to win the Grand Jury Prize for Before Night Falls (2000) at the Venice Film Festival and the Best Director Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for The Diving Bell...

Cutrone's paintings are colorful, lively, and less challenging than those of his contemporaries. As Andy Warhol's assistant at the Factory atop the Decker Building from 1972 until 1980, Cutrone worked with Warhol on paintings, prints, films, and other concepts, eventually co-opting Warhol's earliest work (pre-1960) as well as works by Roy Lichtenstein and others, until finally distilling those myriad influences into the style a few critics eventually labeled "Post-Pop." He exhibited at the Niveau Gallery in 1979 with a Scottish artist called Mike Gall who showed paintings of Snoopy, Mickey and Minnie mouse, the Pink Panther and also a small series of Peter Rabbit paintings...

Jasper Johns Letter ("one either jumps into the water or doesn't"), 1996 Hand signed letter framed on top of a Time Magazine cover depicting a work by the artist Hand signed by Jasper Johns underneath a typewritten letter by his secretary (JJ/st) Frame Included This listing consists of a typewritten letter, hand signed by Jasper Johns in response to one sent by the present addressee. While we do not see the fan's letter that prompted this response from Johns, it's not too difficult to guess, as Jasper Johns replies, stating, in part, "I wish I felt I could advise you but I can't. One either jumps in the water or doesn't. There doesn't seem to be any in-between." No truer words could have been spoken regarding the artist's life. Underneath this letter, is a vintage Time Magazine cover, presumably from the same year, depicting a Jasper Johns Flag...
