About the Item
Until Then is a mixed media on paper, 29.5 x 41.75" image size, signed on the front ‘KOSTABI 2022’ lower right corner, and also signed, titled and dated verso. Framed in a contemporary black frame.
Born in Los Angeles and raised in Whittier, California by Estonian-immigrant parents, Mark Kostabi grew up in what he described as a "typical American home, complete with sectional couch.” His artistic influences are varied, though he has noted di Chirico, Hopper, and Leger as inspirations. Also, there is a conceptual affinity in his approach to his work reminiscent of Warhol’s Factory. The driving force behind Kostabi’s art is contemporary life and the belief that the expression of ideas takes precedence over the expression of beauty. Through his work, Kostabi strives to objectify ideas and images and in doing so, connects to “everyman,” the ubiquitous symbol found in most of his art. As a result, Kostabi’s paintings, in their smooth realism and attention to structure and form, exemplify the beauty of simplicity and the wonder of thought.

Mark Kostabi
Mark Kostabi became a leading figure in New York City's East Village art scene during the mid-1980s, along with other luminaries such as Keith Haring.
Kostabi's work is in the permanent collections of some of the world's most prominent institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., among many others.
