Elvic Steele
1960's British Surrealist Oil Painting - Fantasy Abstract Pink Bird

circa 1960's

About the Item

Stunning original oil painting by Elvic Steele depicting this surrealist fantasy abstract painting. Elvic Steele is a fascinating English painter. Her works entrance the observer, drawing them into her magical and innocent world! Steele was born in 1920 and spent a great deal of her childhood in the countryside. This exposure to nature developed into a passion which lasted all her life. She was an experienced biologist and botanist as well as a keen gardener. Her attention to detail is reflected in her interpretation of flowers and insects, revealing the depth of knowledge and empathy to nature that she possessed. Elvic spent all of her adult life teaching in various schools near her home in Essex. In 1946 she was awarded a sabbatical to attend the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at Benton End in Suffolk, run by Sir Cedric Morris. It was in Morris' delightful garden at Benton End that she found a great deal of her inspiration and continued studying and painting there until the 1970's. Of her work, Cedric Morris said: "She is an excellent draughtswoman and colourist, both in her portraiture and still life painting … ". During the late 1960's, Elvic Steele was living through the harmonious revolutions of "Flower Power" and "Psychedelia". The atmosphere of the times combined with her deep love of nature, a philosophical bent and the remarkable ability to retain the innocent eye of childhood, manifest themselves in these quietly beautiful naturescapes; worlds away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Elvic's work was regularly shown at the Colchester Art Society Exhibitions and she also had a solo exhibition in 1960, when she was in the Scilly Isles. On returning to Dunmow in Essex in 1963, she took Evening Classes at the Dunmow Art Group Meetings. There she exhibited in the Art Group's Exhibitions and in villages in the district. Whilst living in Leamington (1984-88) she had two 'one man' exhibitions at the Royal Spa Centre and also showed at the Leamington Museum. At this time she also sent a number of paintings to the Benton End Group Exhibition in Essex. We have been dealing in the works of Elvic Steele since 1998, having become gripped with the artists work when attending her Studio Sale at Christies in London (July 1998). -------------- We have several similar size works offered for sale, here. In this wonderful size format, they offer tremendous interior design capabilities perhaps being grouped in sets of 2, 4, 8 or even 12's!

  • Les travailleurs de la mère
    By Roberto Matta
    Located in Malmo, SE
Artwork size: 102,5x98 cm Frame size: 110x105 cm This artwork is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Alisée Matta. Provenance: Artist Jean-Pierre Jouffroy, Paris. The estate of the artist Jean-Pierre Jouffroy, Paris. “The heart is an eye,” writes Nobel laureate Octavio Paz in an essay on Matta’s paintings. Matta creates a world coloured both by a sunny faith in the future and by visions of impending doom. Roberto Sebastian Echaurren Antonio Matta, who died aged 91 on 23 November 2002, was born in Santiago, Chile, on 11 November 1911 into a family with Spanish, French and Basque roots, and raised in an atmosphere of religiosity. By the age of 21 he had graduated and begun work as an architect, but his leisure time he devoted to sketching and painting. In 1933 he travelled to Europe for the first time, visiting Greece, Yugoslavia, Italy and other countries, and subsequently taking the initiative to collaborate with the architect, Le Corbusier. As time passed, however, Matta’s enthusiasm for a career in architecture waned, and he began to devote himself full-time to art, making early acquaintances with surrealists such as Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, André Breton and others. Between 1939 and 1948 Matta, like many of his artistic contemporaries, lived in self-imposed exile in the USA, but, after almost 10 years’ absence from Europe, he returned to make first Rome and then, a few years later, Paris his home. Throughout most of the rest of his life Matta commuted between his studio in Paris and his creative refuge in the monastery outside Rome. And it is here, in Italy, that he produced his greatest paintings. Matta’s first retrospective in Sweden was organised in 1956 when his works were exhibited in what was then Galerie Colibri – run by, among others, the artist C O Hultén...
