George Dannatt’s long career as a painter and sculptor ended with the artist’s death in 2009 at the age of 94. He was a respected member of a group of artists impressed by the qualities of the English countryside and coastline, including Terry Frost, John Wells, Bryan Winter and Dennis Mitchell, all of whom were alive to the unique visual appeal of the south and west of England. Working from his studio in Wiltshire and travelling frequently among the villages, hills and coastline of the region, Dannatt would take home pencil sketches of field systems, cliffs and beaches, with notes on colours to be used and shapes to be investigated. He favoured small scale in which he fashioned exquisite, thoughtful abstractions of landscape themes.

He was a respected member of a group of artists impressed by the qualities of the English countryside and coastline, including Terry Frost, John Wells, Bryan Winter and Dennis Mitchell. Working from his studio in Wiltshire and travelling frequently among the villages, hills and coastline of the region, Dannatt would take home pencil sketches of field systems, cliffs and beaches, with notes on colours to be used and shapes to be investigated. His life-long interest in the geometry of nature, together with his virtuosity with colour, texture, tone and balance, are hallmarks of his style. Viewers will notice the very precise geometry in this work which is composed of strong horizontal, vertical and curvilinear elements which interconnect. Dannatt’s life-long involvement in the landscape resulted in an important contribution to the Wessex landscape school – a distinctive and perhaps unique artistic formation that belongs to the established history of modern British art.

- "Untitled Abstract" Oil on Board, Abstract Expressionist, Signed by the ArtistLocated in Detroit, MISALE ONE WEEK ONLY The energy and gusto of the applied paint in "Untitled Abstract" appears close to violent except for the calming influence of the circle in the middle. The red circle tempers the movement a little and brings all the strokes and wild directions into a harmony that is bursting with life. This is an extraordinarily expressive painting by Simpson. Simpson became the first African American to receive a prestigious five-year fellowship from the Charleston Scientific and Cultural Education fund and left South Carolina in 1949 for New York City after he finished high school. He attended New York University and Cooper Union while working in the frame shop of Herbert Benevy. Many well-known artists came to the frame shop and in time critiqued Simpson's work and developed a relationship with him. At NYU Simpson became acquainted with Hale Woodruff...Category
