Maria Stabio
The Light That Won't Turn Off

2018

About the Item

Artist Commentary: This piece is part of a series I've been working on about my recent trip visiting family in the Philippines. The paintings all contain layered elements of plants, people, and objects. Visiting unfamiliar places can bring a refreshed perspective, and that definitely applies here. I kept noticing all the large and bright tropical plants popping up between the densely packed homes in the busy city, people walking by with bags of food or selling roasted chicken by the roadside. Each painting also refers to a specific story from an experience I had during my visit. In this case, I wanted to depict the lightbulb in the room where I was staying, which would flicker all night despite being turned off. Keywords: light, transparent, hand
