About the Item

Mixed composition on wooden panel Marie-Pierre Autonne Born in Paris in 1960, Marie-Pierre Autonne studied in a Montessori method school. At the same time, she took drawing lessons in the Martenot method and painting lessons in a painter's studio on rue du dragon. It was on this same street that she went on to study graphic design at Met de Penninghen. Independent by nature, for a long time she made the profession of graphic designer coincide with that of a travel guide. From the peaks of the Himalayas to the Cape of Good Hope, many horizons shaped her sensitivity to beauty, to the passing of time, which is not the same for everyone, to the many colors and diversity of the world. Her work as a graphic designer refined her sense of color and layout. 2009: departure for Montreal where she fully directs her life towards painting. Charmed by the Quebec birch wood, she turns it into an anchor of her painting. She shares a workshop "L'œuf 425" with a Cluca, French painter and Stanley February, Haitian visual artist. This represented a beautiful period of sharing, projects and concert-exhibitions. She develops her two sensitivities there: an abstract one, primarily concerned with a search for color and materials, the other one more centered on the wild nature of Quebec. 2015: return to France in Valence. Her lens becomes more intimate, capturing the elusive moments of beauty of the Drôme that surrounds her on a daily basis. After some good exhibitions both in Valence (Hôtel de Flandresy / Valence - Orangerie de Montéléger - Medieval Garden of Uzès…) and in Paris (104 kléber), she continues her journey and settles in 2020 on the banks of the Loire near Angers. Hypnotized by the majestic Loire and its affluents (another passion: rowing), she shares with us this form of eternity, the underside of water and her world of trees and clouds that reflect in it. She paints pictures for the pleasure of the eyes and the soul, and readily believes that people can absorb the energy and serenity that they hold by directing their gaze there for just a few moments.

Like the Westerns I grew up with, my own work is camouflaged in a veil of nostalgia. The figures in my work are often portrayed against a stark background. This forces the viewer to recognize the myth before the critique exposes itself. I work from observation and my imagination using watercolor and traditional printmaking methods. The figurative images I create are heavily researched. By using the West, a subject that I am both familiar with and continue to question, I aim to engage with our inherent perceptions of the past and the myths embedded within. - Jed Webster Smith
