1960s Paul Feeley School Color Field Painting

c. 1960s

About the Item

School of Paul Feeley Untitled, c. 1960s Oil on canvas 20 x 59 5/8 in. Signed lower right Primarily a painter, Paul Feeley (American, 1910 - 1966) favored canvases with simple geometric forms in repeating groups. He used upright bluster shapes, oblongs, etc. and the impression is much softer than hard edged geometry. His sculpture was free standing symmetrical wood structures. A retrospective of his work was held in Spring, 1998 at Lawrence Markey Gallery in New York. This painting was executed likely by someone studying alongside or with peers of Feeley's, focusing on the same geometric style and minimalism. (Partial bio sourced from AskArt)

Excerpt from interview with Voyage LA: "I studied theater design at New York University but always wanted to be a painter. The painting I was drawn to make was a hybrid of both painting and sculpture. My first one man show in New York were abstract paintings covered in sand. My second one may show in New York were paintings on chalkboards with texts. I’ve had one man shows in Zurich, Tokyo, and Istanbul. Afterward, I felt stuck; an artist’s block had come over me. I turned my attention to raising my daughter and focusing on her becoming an artist. Julia Adolphe is now a successful contemporary classical composer...

Oil on canvas. Informed by a variety of different cultures, Ostovany feels a connection to multiple separate and yet complementary mystical traditions. He looks toward elements of Western and Eastern art, literature, spirituality, poetry and music to create an environment and a mindset conducive to his process, which is connected to Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. This work is part of the Fragments of Poetry and Silence series. The inspiration and the point of departure for this series is a poem by John Berger...
