About the Item
Albert Marquet was a French painter. He initially became one of the Fauve painters and a lifelong friend of Henri Matisse. Marquet subsequently painted in a more naturalistic style, primarily landscapes, but also several portraits and, between 1910 and 1914, several female nude paintings.
Marquet, great master of landscapes
and excellent painter of water
He met Matisse in 1890 in the Ecole des Arts Décos, then entered the Beaux-Arts in Gustave Moreau’s class. Matisse, Manguin and Camoin became faithful friends.
In 1905 Marquet exhibited at the famous Salon d’Automne with the Fauves.
That same year he began his series of the Quays of Paris, boldly brushed paintings with thick shadows using two or three violently contrasting or blurred colours and which are considered as the Fauve period of this artist.
Marquet life was punctuated by travel with a predilection for Northern Africa and in particular, Algiers, where he met his wife Marcelle Martinet in 1920.
Marquet’s art is all about exactitude and sobriety. His watercolours and canvasses are full of the strength of one who knows how to condense the essential and hide the superfluous. He had a sense of balance and the weight of things. He was an excellent painter of water in all it’s aspects – rivers or ocean – and we are seized by the authenticity of his emotions.
Marquet knew how to find effect in his studies and we can say that all of Marquet’s studies were paintings and all his paintings kept the spontaneity of studies. Whether it was Vesuvius or the Bay of Naples, he had a fresh eye full of a large and natural modernity.
Marquet’s fame has continued to grow with time. He is today an undisputed Master of French painting.
In 2019, the Musée d’art moderne André Malraux (MuMa le Havre) acquires from our gallery a major painting of Albert Marquet’s Fauve period: “Le Havre, le bassin”.

Albert Marquet
Albert Marquet was born in Bordeaux in 1875. He studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris from 1890-1894, where he became friends with Henri Matisse. He continued his studies at the School of Fine Arts in the studio of Gustave Moreau, from 1895-1898. Albert Marquet paints landscapes and post-impressionist nudes that become more and more colourful and simplified; he expresses himself - following the example of Matisse - in pure tones. At the beginning of the century Modern artist Marquet exhibits in the Parisian Salons (the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d’Automne) and takes part in numerous art events organised abroad (Russia, the United States, etc.). Marquet meets Dufy and Camoin. He is present at the famous ‘Cage aux Fauves’, that makes a scandal at the Salon d’Automne in 1905; at this time he paints canvases with forms surrounded by black, representing portraits, the Normandy beaches or animated scenes. The artist represents the Seine, often views seen from above and creates variations of themes by changing the time of day and using different lighting. His first solo exhibition is organized in 1907 at the Druet Gallery in Paris. At the beginning of the 1910’s, Marquet paints a series of realistic female nudes. He is unfit for military service in 1914. From the 1920’s until the 1940’s, Albert Marquet takes numerous trips to Europe and Africa that are for him, sources of inspiration in his art, a means for the man to see and learn about other cultures. Albert Marquet’s theme of predilection is his landscapes close to the water (the sea, lake, or river), landscapes that he treats using soft tones that are dominantly grey. Albert Marquet, a sensitive man often well-liked for his modesty, died in 1947 in Paris.

- Adriana Pincherle (1905- 1996). A lady with a turban and green shadows.By Adriana PincherleLocated in Firenze, ITAdriana Pincherle, (1905, Rome - 1996, Florence). A lady with a turban and green shadows in a landscape. Italian female painter, active in Rome and from 1943 in Florence. Painting signed and dated lower right: Adriana Pincherle. 1973. Oil painting on canvas. The simple composition, which represents a woman from behind, bears the influence of Matisse's avant-garde style, with bold and refined color combinations. The shape is created with color, creating an almost surreal and highly expressive effect. The painter once said: "My painting has always been figurative, not realistic. In this sense I felt very similar to the Informal movement, which, fundamentally, pushed my passion for color to the extreme." FREE SHIPPING in Italy and Europe Artist Biography: Pincherle Adriana Rome 25 December 1905 - Florence 8 January 1996 Adriana was born in Rome on 25 December 1905, into a family in which two cultures were intertwined: the Jewish one of her father, the engineer Carlo Pincherle, of Venetian origins and in love with painting, and the Catholic one of her mother, Isa di she. De Marsanich, a noble but decayed Hungarian. Adriana is the eldest child and two years older than her brother Alberto, known to the literary world under the pseudonym Alberto Moravia As Pincherle herself says about her, as a child she spent hours admiring her father who painted watercolours, and it was perhaps then that her interest in drawing and above all her particular sensitivity towards color was born. Thus, having completed her classical studies, she began to attend the "ladies" atelier of the engraver Alfredo Petrucci and the free nude courses at the Academy, where she met Mimmo Spadini and Scipione, and came into contact with Roman art. In 1931 she made her debut at the collective "First Roman exhibition of female art" at the "Galleria di Roma", while the following year, at the same gallery, she exhibited a solo show together with Corrado Cagli, already attracting the attention of critics, famous comment by Longhi, cited several times by Pincherle herself, who prefers the "sissy" between the two artists. As evidence of the results achieved by Adriana since her first works, we remember that among her works presented in 1932 there was also the famous "Standing Self-Portrait", now in the Uffizi Pincherle's growth passes through places and periods common to both the Roman School and the school of painters of the via Cavour group (Mafai, Raphaël, Scipione), with tangents and deviations, but his pictorial research arrives at original solutions independent of any label . Fundamental to the maturation of her art was her stay in Paris in 1933, in which Pincherle admired and studied closely the Fauves, Renoir and in particular Matisse. In the same year she exhibited for the first time in Florence at the Sala d'arte delle Nazioni with Milena Barilli...Category
