About the Item
Symbols abound in this monumental painting by Bruno Surdo. Each of the subjects on this canvas is dependent upon the other. They require the presence of the others for balance and harmony from a purely artistic standpoint, but each seeks their individuality, their own path, and each is in a struggle to connect with what it is to be human. This is a theme that runs through Bruno’s artwork. The viewer will recognize references to mythology, literature, and folklore, as well as reflections of Jungian Psychology in the archetypes represented. These themes and references, combined with Bruno’s extraordinary technical expertise to create an artwork for all time.

Chicago-based fine art painter Bruno A. Surdo creates provocative works centered around the human condition. Classically trained in drawing and oil painting in the tradition of Renaissance masters, Surdo displays a strong command of the human form and explores the depths of humanity through his dynamic compositions of people and places. - Paradox of St. Sebastian - Contemporary Oil Painting with Graffiti and ShacklesBy Bruno SurdoLocated in Chicago, ILThis figure of St. Sebastian has long been a favorite subjects for artists. In this modern interpretation we see St. Sebastian shackled in chains and leather restraints against an industrial graffiti covered wall. He gazes upwards while his body is pummeled with rubber suction cup darts. Historical references are ripe for interpretation in this painting. St. Sebastian is known as the patron saint for athletes, soldiers and warriors. He is said to have survived his initial wounds from arrows by way of divine intervention only to be beaten to death later after warning the emperor of his sins.
