Old Master Painting, Flemish Baroque Grisaille, Cornelis Schut, Mary with Child

c. 1640

About the Item

Cornelis Schut, atrributed to (1597 - Antwerp - 1655) Mary with Child, St. Elisabeth and John the Baptist en grisaille Oil on wood, 33,5 x 26,5 cm Cornelis Schut was born in Antwerp and became - after his apprenticeship with an unknown master - one of the employees of the Rubens workshop. Together with Rubens he worked, for example, on the so-called Pompa Introitus, the festive decoration on the occasion of the triumphal entry of Cardinal Prince Ferdinand into Ghent and Antwerp. In the beginning, Schut was stylistically strongly influenced by Rubens, but in the course of time he detached himself more and more from his model. He created numerous altarpieces, but also mythological representations as well as medallions in still lifes. The present picture is painted en grisaille, i.e. it is executed exclusively in grey, white and black. This was often done in preparation for copper engravings. Schut created the subject shown above several times - three versions are known. One version (oil on canvas, 156 x 211 cm.) was auctioned at Hampel in Munich in 2010. A copperplate engraving made after the present picture has not yet been found. The painting is framed in a black wooden frame.
