Pastoral Scenes
Oil on canvas
A delightful pair of 18th-century pastoral scenes, this charming set of oil paintings depicts two quintessential tableaus of whimsical countryside life. The mirroring monumental compositions each show shepherdess damsels indulging the romantic advances of would-be casanovas, with one romancer wooing his lady with a white dove and the other charming his paramour with the sweet sounds of music. Painted by a talented artist of the French school, these stunning works are rendered in the rococo tradition of pastoral lovers championed by painters like Boucher and Fragonard.
Beautifully preserved and deftly executed, the paintings display the creamy brushwork, airy atmosphere and evocative Italianate setting typical of the finest French school works of the 1750s. The impressive paintings are further distinguished by their monumental size – measuring nearly 5 ½ feet high – and their storied provenance.
For much of the twentieth century, these paintings decorated the drawing room of Casa Encantada, an opulent 60-room mansion in Bel Air designed in 1939 by T. J. Robsjohn-Gibbings. The home was such a spectacle that Architectural Digest dedicated a full issue to the mansion in 1941, which included photos of these two paintings hanging in the drawing rooms. When legendary hotel magnate Conrad Hilton acquired the property in 1950, he also acquired all of the opulent furnishings and fine art that had been carefully curated and designed for the home. Hilton described the property as “one of the fabulous houses of the world,” and the home was certainly elevated by the monumental 18th-century French paintings flanking the drawing room. The paintings thus remained in the possession of Conrad Hilton's son, Mr. Barron Hilton, for the next 40 years until his death in 2019.

- La lecture au jardin (Lesson in the Garden)By Georges d'EspagnatLocated in New Orleans, LAFrench Post-Impressionist painter Georges d’Espagnat captures a charming moment between a mother and her child in this vibrant oil on canvas. Rendered with a studied use of complementary colors and bold brushstrokes, the painting showcases the artist's unique Post-Impressionist style. Remembered as one of the most individualistic artists of the 20th century, his distinctive canvases bring together the loose brushwork of the Impressionists and the bold color palette favored by the Fauves. Together, they achieve a vibrant spontaneity that lends itself well to the carefree subjects of the present work. Masterfully composed, La lecture au jardin moves beyond the Impressionist instinct to capture a fleeting moment on canvas. Rather, d'Espagnat succeeds in creating a deep feeling of harmony in the work. Warm colors are perfectly balanced with cool tones, while vertical and horizontal lines are softened by the curves of the foliage and his subjects' figures. Through his simplification of forms and intentional use of color and line, he creates a scene that is carefully designed and thoroughly modern. A similar view of a mother and her child by d'Espagnat is currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). The Post-Impressionist painter was an individualist since his youth, choosing to forgo traditional schooling in order to independently study the Old Masters in the Louvre. He soon became involved with the most prominent Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters of the age, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac, who themselves existed outside the traditional norms of French Academic training. In 1891, he exhibited at the Salon des Refusés, and again the following year at the Salon des Indépendants. By 1895, he held his first one-man show in Paris, and just three years later his success earned him a solo show at the prestigious Durand-Ruel Gallery. Between 1905 and 1910 he made several trips to visit Renoir on the Côte d’Azur. Their close friendship resulted in a group exhibition at Marcel Bernheim...Category

- Baigneuses (Bathers)By Louis-Joseph CourtatLocated in New Orleans, LAFrench Academic painter Louis-Joseph Courtat displays his mastery of composition and the female form in this entrancing oil on canvas. Entitled Baigneuses, the work was painted for and exhibited at the 1885 Paris Salon, the foremost exhibition of painters in the Western world. Large in size, it captures two nude bathers within a tranquil beach scene. While the artist's skill for landscape painting is on display, it is his command of form, light and color that bring this canvas to life. The artist specialized in paintings that glorified the nude, and his skill is clear in the luminosity of his models' skin and the classical beauty of their form and proportions. With their soft, undulating curves and flowing hair, Courtat's models reflect the two key influences on the young painter, that of the great Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres as well as his teacher Alexandre Cabanel. Like these two greats who came before him, Courtat similarly follows in the artistic tradition of the female nude that is traceable to classical antiquity and the Italian Renaissance. Born in Paris in 1847, Courtat studied at the famed École des Beaux-Arts under Cabanel. He was one of the Academic master's first students at the school, where he began to teach in 1864. Displaying considerable skill at an early age, Courtat won the Prix de Rome around 1870, and subsequently studied in Rome for a number of years. He returned to Paris in 1873 to make his debut at the Salon, where he was met with immediate success, receiving a third class medal. He received medals again in 1874 and 1875, a remarkable achievement for a painter of his age. In addition to the monumental nudes...Category
