Study of an actor, ca 1880 dramatic oil young man staring into fire 19th Century

ca 1880

About the Item

A dramatic, one of a kind oil study. Certainly not your run of the mill 19th Century portait! Depicted is a young man, whose face is brightly lit from what is likely is an open fire. The colour of his red garb - a cape, maybe - is reflected on his cheeks. His expression is thoughtful, intense: he appears to be in he process of making a decision. The painting may be a character portrait of a young actor in a play, all the more so given the (almost rayonnist) curtain in the background. The painting is unsigned and I believe it to be a work by Laurens - one of the last academic artists, and one who painted with great panache - or someone in his circle.
