About the Item

ULPIANO CHECA Spanish, 1860 - 1916 VENICE CANAL signed & located "U. Checa" Venezia (lower left) Also dedicated: "A Marguerite Pinédo affectueusement" oil on canvas 18-3/8 X 21-3/4 inches (46.5 X 55 cm.) framed: 29-5/8 X 33 inches (75 X 83.6 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collection, France ULPIANO FERNANDEZ CHECA SANZ Known in the art world as Ulpiano Checa , was born in Colmenar de Oreja (Madrid) in 1860 and died in Dax (France) in 1916. He studied at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid as a student of Federico de Madrazo. In 1884 he obtained a scholarship to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and expand his studies. His first job as a pensioner causes expectation "The Invasion of the Barbarians" and is awarded at the National Exhibition of 1887 with first medal. In 1888 he moved to Paris as a graphic corpsponsal of the "Spanish and American Illusion", he quickly integrated into the French capital, and participated in all kinds of official acts and competitions of the artistic world. His studio at Boulevard Saint Honoré is frequented by the artists of the city. He is a consecrated painter who sells without difficulties. In 1888 he received the 2nd medal at the Vienna International Exhibition and a 3rd medal at the Universal Parisina in 1889. Its thematic is varied from the themes of Ancient History to the Orientalists, Parisian views and genre painting, with a thorough and precious brushstroke, which captures the effects of movement and speed (whether in its recreations of the careers of cavallos in the old Rome, or they get their scenes from the contemporary era). In the "90s" he travels across the Americas and also frequently travels to Venice where he lives long periods. This work of "Canal Veneciano" is inspired by these long stays in Venice. His brushstroke is much looser with an intense color palette. Life is serene in this painting, it no longer pursues movement as in its many previous works. The calm and calm waters led channel reflect all the intensity of the sun, creating iridescence of mauve, blue and cream colors. There is a light contrast between the two faces of facing houses. But the soft contrast, not very intense. Giving a feeling of placidity and charm to the work. Ulpiano Checa work is represented in the following Art Institutions: - National Museum of the Prado, Madrid. - Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum - National Museum of Fine Arts of Argentina. - Spanish Academy of Fine Arts of Rome. - Museum of Fine Arts of Austria. - San Telmo Museum, San Sebastian - Madrid History Museum - Museum "Ulpiano Checa" of Colmenar de Oreja, Madrid. - Museum of Art and History of Auxerre, France. - Amiens Museum, France - Augustinian Museum, Toulousse, France. - Mulhouse Museum, France. - Trite Museum, Buenos Aires, Argentina

LUIS GRANER Y ARRUFI Spanish, 1863 - 1929 MOONLIT RIVER SCENE signed and dated "L. Graner, 1925" (lower right) Oil on canvas 20-1/8 X 30 inches (51X 76 cm.) framed: 25-3/4 X 35-3/4 inches (65 X 90.5 cm.) PROVENANCE NEAL AUCTION COMPANY, New Orleans, LA, USA Private Collection, Barcelona Graner paints this work, Moonlit on the river, during his stay in the United States in the last stage of his artistic life, from 1910 to 1928, in full stage of maturity. This artwork reflects the constant search of the artist for the effects of light in his work. This persistent concern for light remains throughout his artistic life, which he learned in his Parisian stage under the influence of the painter Frances Platour. The silver light of the moon and the small lights at distance, which are tiny foci of artificial light, reflecting the river water, forming a chromatic range of greens, ocher and pearly that give a certain mystery to the composition, creating a modern approach to the landscape, by placing the two large trees at the edge of the river in the foreground Luís Graner y Arrufí, Spanish (1863–1929) was a Catalan painter in the Realistic style. He was born in Barcelona, and studied at the Escola de la Llotja from 1883, with Antoni Caba (color/composition) and Benet Mercadé (drawing). During his final year at school, he received a grant to study in Madrid, where he copied and learned from the Old Masters at the Museo del Prado. After that, supported by a fellowship, he moved to Paris and became a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Later, he returned to Barcelona, but continued to travel to cities throughout Europe, including Berlin, Munich and Düsseldorf. Influenced by Richard Wagner's concept of "Gesamtkunstwerk" (Total Work of Art), he was motivated to create his own total art experience and organized the "Sala Mercè" (Mercy Hall) in Barcelona's Rambla District. The project involved contributors from every artistic discipline, including the new field of cinematography. The room was decorated by Antoni Gaudí. Other participants included Adrià Gual, Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas...

  • "Boulevard of Paris", 20th Century oil on canvas by Spanish artist E. Grau Sala
    By Emilio Grau Sala
    Located in Madrid, ES
EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 BOULEVARD OF PARIS signed Grau Sala (lower right) oil on canvas 25-1/2 X 32 inches (65 X 81 cm.) framed: 36-1/4 X 42-1/2 inches (92 X 108 cm.) PROVENANCE Sale: Sotheby´s Olympia London, 20 October 2006 Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. In this work Grau Sala has a loose, subtle brushstroke, in which the color shapes the entire work. The bright and transparent whites that give life to young schoolgirls contrast with the brushstrokes of blacks from the nun who accompanies them. The explosion of greens is refreshing, it surrounds us and transports us to an idyllic place, even if it is a citizen boulevard, which becomes friendly and beautiful. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...

(lower right) oil on canvas 19-3/4 x 25-1/2 inches (50 x 64.5 cm.) framed: 27-3/4 x 33-3/8 inches (70 x 84.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collector, Madrid An elegant night view of the Parisian Republic Square, with amazing light effects that catch us. This work executed based on brushstrokes of long and safe strokes that make the forms vibrate with vivid color. Parisian nightlife is trapped in this corner of Paris. The monumental sculpture that symbolizes freedom and that presides over the square serves as a reference behind the tram between a light chiaroscuro. Meanwhile, the effervecent and lively life of the cafes that surround it vibrate strongly with its bright lights. Èdouard León Cortés (1882–1969) was a French post-impressionist artist of French and Spanish ancestry. He is known as "Le Poète Parisien de la Peinture" or "the Parisian Poet of Painting" because of his diverse Paris cityscapes in a variety of weather and night settings.
