Late 19th Century Tonalist Landscape -- Afternoon by the Pond
Located in Soquel, CA
Gorgeous tonalist oil painting woman walking in field by pond with home in background by Willis Seaver Adams (American, 1844-1921), circa 1880. Trees and an amazing sky in the background add depth and interest to this beautiful piece. Signed "W. S. Adams" lower right corner. Condition: Previous restoration includes relining of canvas. Frame is vintage gilt molded and wood frame and shows previous repair of molding losses. Image size: 20"H x 24"W. Willis Seaver Adams was known for his landscapes of the Connecticut River Valley. A relative recluse for much of his artistic life, his loneliness can be seen in much of his works. Oil miniatures were the focus for almost all of his later works. He is credited with over 425 oils, watercolors, and drawings. Willis Seaver was born in 1844 on a farm in Suffield, near the Connecticut River. He intermittently attended the Suffield Academy, and always wanted to be a painter. A wealthy doctor became his patron, and financed his studies in 1868 at the Royal Academy in Antwerp. When the doctor passed away, Adams returned home and struggled to make a living painting. After working for a photographer for three years, he opened his own studio. Adams helped organize Clevelands first watercolor exhibit in 1876. Soon thereafter, he completed a portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes, then governor of Ohio, prior to his becoming President of the United States. This portrait enhanced Adams notoriety. In 1878, Adams traveled to Italy where he opened a studio in Venice, and became friendly with neighbor James Whistler. Prior to returning to Springfield, Adams lived in Florence, Italy for three years. He returned to became an instructor for the Springfield Art Association, and began to exhibit his works at the galleries of James D. Gill. His first one-man exhibit was held there in 1894. Other successful exhibitions took place in Chicago, New York, and Boston. Although his works garnered respectable prices and reflected his success, Adams felt he was due more recognition. In 1906, he moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts and converted a barn into a studio. There, he fell into relative obscurity, accompanied mainly by his dog, Collie. In 1921, Adams passed away. Examples of Willis Adams works can be seen at the Kent Memorial Library, the Wadsworth Atheneum, and the Suffield Academy. Several Suffield residents are thought to own Adams paintings.

"Moonlit River Scene", Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas by Luis Graner y Arrufi
By Luis Graner Y Arrufi
Located in Madrid, ES
LUIS GRANER Y ARRUFI Spanish, 1863 - 1929 MOONLIT RIVER SCENE signed and dated "L. Graner, 1925" (lower right) Oil on canvas 20-1/8 X 30 inches (51X 76 cm.) framed: 25-3/4 X 35-3/4 inches (65 X 90.5 cm.) PROVENANCE NEAL AUCTION COMPANY, New Orleans, LA, USA Private Collection, Barcelona Graner paints this work, Moonlit on the river, during his stay in the United States in the last stage of his artistic life, from 1910 to 1928, in full stage of maturity. This artwork reflects the constant search of the artist for the effects of light in his work. This persistent concern for light remains throughout his artistic life, which he learned in his Parisian stage under the influence of the painter Frances Platour. The silver light of the moon and the small lights at distance, which are tiny foci of artificial light, reflecting the river water, forming a chromatic range of greens, ocher and pearly that give a certain mystery to the composition, creating a modern approach to the landscape, by placing the two large trees at the edge of the river in the foreground Luís Graner y Arrufí, Spanish (1863–1929) was a Catalan painter in the Realistic style. He was born in Barcelona, and studied at the Escola de la Llotja from 1883, with Antoni Caba (color/composition) and Benet Mercadé (drawing). During his final year at school, he received a grant to study in Madrid, where he copied and learned from the Old Masters at the Museo del Prado. After that, supported by a fellowship, he moved to Paris and became a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Later, he returned to Barcelona, but continued to travel to cities throughout Europe, including Berlin, Munich and Düsseldorf. Influenced by Richard Wagner's concept of "Gesamtkunstwerk" (Total Work of Art), he was motivated to create his own total art experience and organized the "Sala Mercè" (Mercy Hall) in Barcelona's Rambla District. The project involved contributors from every artistic discipline, including the new field of cinematography. The room was decorated by Antoni Gaudí. Other participants included Adrià Gual, Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas...

Located in Soquel, CA
Tonalist "Landscape by a Lake" - Oil on Canvas This ethereal landscape scene, by artist Hunter Mallory (American, 1926-2014), depicts two figures low on the horizon line, one walking through the brush, the other kneeling low next to the lake. Large, billowing cumulus clouds fill a broad sky above the lake. Signed by artist, "Mallory," in bottom left corner. "Landscape by a Lake," written in verso on frame. Frame Size: 18"H x 22"W Image Size: 13.5"H x 17.75"W Hunter Mallory (American, 1926-2014), a self-employed professional artist for over 50 years, was the owner and director of Mallory Studios where his inspiration came to life. He specialized in portraiture as well as paintings/drawings of landscapes, seascapes and wildlife. Hunter was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. During his youth he developed an interest in cartooning. He collected popular comic books and comic strips from the Sunday newspaper. From studying and imitating the cartoonists’ style, he developed his early drawing skills and attempted to create his own comic strip characters. Following high school, Hunter served in the US Army during WW II in the Philippines and after the war transferred to the Army Air Corps. In the Air Force, he was a transport plane radio operator attaining the rank of Corporal. In later life, Hunter continued to pursue the excitement of flying through his computer’s flight simulator. He was also an avid player of the computer game X Plane. Following his military service, Hunter entered the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia and received a B.S. in Architecture in 1954, graduating second in his class. As an undergraduate, he won a national competition for a full scholarship for a year of study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainbleau, France, where he studied in 1953. After graduation, he continued fine art studies in Italy and New York City where he further enhanced his life drawing skills and developed a very personal style of portraiture. He completed over 600 portraits throughout his career. Hunter devoted six years to the profession of Architecture before turning full time to the fine arts. After returning from Europe in 1959, he settled in Connecticut and had numerous solo and group shows in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., New Haven, Hartford and many smaller towns throughout the New England area. His professional skills were utilized by many diverse organizations. He was frequently invited to jury local and regional art shows and to give demonstrations of art techniques to both public and private groups. For six years he was a member of the teaching staff of the Guilford Handcraft Association conducting classes in art for all ages. He also taught for The Greenwich Art Barn and was an instructor and tutor at Eagle Hill School of Greenwich, CT, a private school for children with learning disabilities. In 1985, Hunter opened a west coast studio in the Los Angeles area where he lived and worked for about 10 years. One notable commission while there was to execute several portraits of living past presidents for a private collection. Those portraits included Gerald Ford, James Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Sr., William Clinton and George Bush, Jr. His portrait of George Bush...
