« A Mediterranean capriccio » Oil on canvas by Abraham STORCK With an appraisal by René Millet ( Well Known French Expert in Paris) Within a tortoise-shell Turtle This oil on canvas of the golden age of Dutch painting presents an imaginary view of a bustling Mediterranean port animated by characters wearing turbans. Very popular Style in the 17th century that allowed to flatter customers' exotic dreams, as they were unable to move and could only travel in dreams ... Elements of architectures such as a fountain, triumphal arch, sculptures, ramparts are represented along a port. We distinguish a few boats in port, another in the background, and characters in full operation. In the foreground, a group of three men in suits are represented probably Turkish. The significance of the sky is characteristic of the Dutch schools of the seventeenth century. The painting elaborated construction brings depth to the whole. The lines and different architectural composition levels offers many perspectives. Note the perfect balance between the animated scenes and the parts of the sky and the sea. Painter of seascapes, harbor scenes, landscapes; Abraham Storck is mentioned in the records of the Guild of St. Luke in 1679. His repertoire is varied: views of ports, battleships, Imaginary Mediterranean ports and scenes of navigation. He painted many Italien views although he did not get to know this country. It has certainly been inspired by prints to be able to represent the monuments within his paintings. Storck was the precursor to the "Caprices Architecturaux" genre which one was very popular in the eighteenth century.
