Mid-20th Century
About the Item
In this piece, the artist depicts his subject in an abstract and impressionistic way, capturing the busy Parisian street from the 20th Century with much life. The artist mostly used oil with a pallet knife, with impasto paint, and then by using subtle brush strokes with a wide color pallet, a beautiful rendition of the street with figures is accomplished. This piece is executed whimsically, yet dramatically evoking an emotion of wonder and beauty. The painting is signed lower right by the artist and it is stamped from the artist studio on verso and it comes housed in an antique ornate wood carved frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.
Art measures 10 x 8 inches
Frame measures 14.5 x 12.5 inches
Antonio DeVity was a pseudonym used by the Italian artist Umberto Marone (1901–1993) born in Reggio-Calabria City on February 1901. His life can be described with a few sentences: his big passion for painting and art, and his great love for Paris, the city where his grandmother was originally from. His father was a very well known painter in Naples at the beginning of 1900, and he introduced young Antonio to the world of art. Antonio lived in Rome where he was taught by Balla, and also he attended Naples Liceo d'Arte and at the age of 17 he moved to his beloved Paris, in a small attic room near Place Saint-Michel, where he became friend and admirer of many well known Parisian painters of that time.
In those years he had the opportunity to attend the “École des beaux arts”, and to appreciate those places that were often represented in his paintings, including Notre Dame, the Café de la Paix and the Moulin Rouge among others. During his time in Paris he first started using the pseudonym name "Antonio DeVity". This choice along with giving homage to his beloved Paris, contributed to creating an aura of mystery about the painter. After his return to Naples, Umberto founded a School which rapidly became a prestigious Art Studio, which constituted an important meeting place for artists from Southern Italy. In 1950, as soon as he was able to, he opened his art studio in Naples that in less than 10 years became a very important meeting place for Neapolitan artists. During the 1960's DeVity art studio became one of the most important Neapolitan school, with more than 20 painters who studied with him, and in the late 1960s, the Art Studio was directed by Umberto's son Achille.
Antonio DeVity's first exhibitions dated back to 1953 in Bruxelles, 1955 in Marrakech, 1956 in Madrid, 1957 in Morocco and the followers especially in France, between Paris and other big cities. His works were present at many exhibitions in Paris and Rome and also many of his pieces can be found in private collections and at the picture galleries at Rome, Paris, Bern, Naples, Florence. He spent his later life in Naples until his death in 1993 and the art studio was closed a few years earlier of his passing.

- "Boulevard of Paris", 20th Century oil on canvas by Spanish artist E. Grau SalaBy Emilio Grau SalaLocated in Madrid, ESEMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 BOULEVARD OF PARIS signed Grau Sala (lower right) oil on canvas 25-1/2 X 32 inches (65 X 81 cm.) framed: 36-1/4 X 42-1/2 inches (92 X 108 cm.) PROVENANCE Sale: Sotheby´s Olympia London, 20 October 2006 Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. In this work Grau Sala has a loose, subtle brushstroke, in which the color shapes the entire work. The bright and transparent whites that give life to young schoolgirls contrast with the brushstrokes of blacks from the nun who accompanies them. The explosion of greens is refreshing, it surrounds us and transports us to an idyllic place, even if it is a citizen boulevard, which becomes friendly and beautiful. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...Category

- Winter Evening Fifth Avenue - New York at NightBy Ernest FieneLocated in Miami, FLErnest Fiene depicts Fifth Avenue looking down from 57th Street with an unobstructed view of the Empire State Building. The absence of newer glass and steel architecture gives the painting the charm of old New York. The artist captures a dark, moody blue sky as light bounces back from the clouds. This contrasts with the somewhat haunting yellow glow given to pedestrians and street traffic. The people have somewhat of a zombie quality akin to George Tooker. (lower right) oil on canvas 19-3/4 x 25-1/2 inches (50 x 64.5 cm.) framed: 27-3/4 x 33-3/8 inches (70 x 84.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collector, Madrid An elegant night view of the Parisian Republic Square, with amazing light effects that catch us. This work executed based on brushstrokes of long and safe strokes that make the forms vibrate with vivid color. Parisian nightlife is trapped in this corner of Paris. The monumental sculpture that symbolizes freedom and that presides over the square serves as a reference behind the tram between a light chiaroscuro. Meanwhile, the effervecent and lively life of the cafes that surround it vibrate strongly with its bright lights. Èdouard León Cortés (1882–1969) was a French post-impressionist artist of French and Spanish ancestry. He is known as "Le Poète Parisien de la Peinture" or "the Parisian Poet of Painting" because of his diverse Paris cityscapes in a variety of weather and night settings.
