About the Item

Looking Up Quadtych by Emily Finch [2021] original Oil Paint on Canvas Image size: H:100 cm x W:30 cm Complete Size of Unframed Work: H:100 cm x W:30 cm x D:4cm Sold Unframed Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look Looking Up Quadtych is a selection of paintings that are part of a series called Look Up Trees. Emz spends time with trees daily to help her mind heal from PTSD in 2021. She has 'grown' over 140 trees in oil paint and digitally on her ipad. The mindful painting process she's established helps her to recognise and work through some difficult emotions. She's currently working on ways she can share these tools with others through a mindful sketching practice. Each piece measures 100cm x 30cm x 4cm as a collection they measure 100cm x 120cm x 4cm. Looking up through horse chestnut leaves when I’m feeling confused [2021] This painting of the sun shining down through Horse Chestnut tree leaves onto the shady ground of Emz's local woods, was painted the day she learned a new word. Komorebi. This is a Japanese word that means just that - the sun shining through layers of leaves. Emz spent a long time trying to describe the feeling of looking at the sun through leaves..something she's been in awe of since a child. Just to know that there's a word for it, helps her feel less confused about the world. Looking up through birch leaves to calm my busy mind [2021] This young Birch tree is growing up next to a much bigger Birch on the common opposite Emz's house. After reading 'Finding the Mother Tree' by Suzanne Simard, Emz learned the amazing scientific discoveries she made about 'Mother trees' and how they look after their young by sharing carbons, sugars, water and warning signals through the Mycorrhizal fungi networks between their roots. This young birch is the best example Emz found of the maternal nature of trees - this young birch clearly being nurtured by its much larger mother. Witnessing this maternal nature, and spending time contemplating how wonderful these trees are, have helped to calm the noise in Emz's mind. Looking Up through white blossom when she feels lost [2021] This is a painting of a blossom tree on the route Emz takes to her daughter's nursery. Each spring, she watches the buds of the tree bloom and bring forth these incredible pink blossoms. The day she painted this tree, Emz stood under the fragrant blossoms and listened to the incredible sounds of the bees busy on their special mission. It was the perfect moment of pause before picking up her brushes. "A native of New Orleans, Jill Hackney studied painting at The Cleveland Institute of Art and Louisiana State University, where she earned her BFA. She is a founding member and twice president of Studio 801, an artists’ cooperative in Baton Rouge. She was also recently selected as a Fellow of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation for her work as President of the NUNU Arts and Culture Collective. Best known for her still life and landscape work, her focus is to show light’s impact on her subjects through layers of vertical and linear strokes. Using the natural texture of the wood on which she paints, each painting is approached with a sense of nostalgia. The end effect is a union of the senses, which awakens feelings of joy, serenity, and peace. Jill currently functions as the Director of International Communications for NUNU Arts and Culture Collective." "Echo 1", Pair of Impressionist...

  • Neucleus - 21st Century, Contemporary Art, Abstract, Oil Painting, Spray Paint
    By Scott Naismith

"My recent work now becomes more involved with cloud cover and its effect on light and colour through both its translucent and opaque properties. Clouds are visible masses of water droplets or frozen ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. They have the ability to refract and reflect, creating an ever changing perception of light which inspires my use of colour. I am constantly referring to the paradox of a cloud’s perceived weight and its fragility and the relationship between the cool and warm colours created by it. I have become increasingly interested in catching the moment when heavy overcast clears to reveal clear blue sky, a cool colour that complements the warmth it brings. While the most obvious manifestation of light refraction at this time would occur in the form of a rainbow, I will be concerned with accentuating the infinite, more subtle effects. I find myself inspired increasingly by the works of Turner, who created ephemeral atmospheric effects using large washes of liquid paint. Other influences include Henry Matisse, Francis Cadell...
