Gifford Beal
American Painter, Gifford Beal (1879-1956), "Leaving the Harbor" Seascape

About the Item

Gifford Beal always knew that he wanted to paint. At the age of 12, he began studying with William Merritt Chase in New York City and during the summer at Chase’s School in Long Island. Beal would continue his work with Chase while attending Princeton University. He also studied at the Art Students League under Frank Vincent DuMond and Henry Ward Ranger and, later, served as its president for a record 14 years. Beal had early professional success, winning national painting and watercolor prizes. Beal's subjects varied. He found inspiration not only in holiday spectacle and pageantry but also in the natural and everyday side of life. Some of his best known pictures are of holiday crowds, circus performers, and hunting scenes. Yet, Beal enjoyed painting the Caribbean Islands and the landscape along the Hudson River and in Gloucester and Rockport, Massachusetts, where he spent summers starting in 1923. Beal was a member of the American Water Color Society, the Century Association and served as President of the Art Students League from 1913 to 1929. He became a full member of the National Academy in 1914 and participated in their annual exhibitions, winning numerous prizes over the years, including the Hallgarten Prize (1910), the Clark Prize (1913), the Altman Prize (1931) and the Saltus Medal (1948). He also showed with the Pennsylvania Academy and the Art Institute of Chicago. He exhibited his work throughout New England, including at the Worcester Art Museum, the Boston Art Club, and the Newport Art Association. Examples of Beal’s work are part of many private and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, Connecticut, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
