Peter Monamy
Firing a Salute in The Nore, Signed Seascape by Peter Monamy, Dated 1724

1729

About the Item

Oil on canvas, signed and dated '1724' bottom right Image size: 48 x 36 inches (121 x 91 cm) 19th Century hand carved gilt frame This rediscovered painting is a splendid example of Monamy’s work and also a very complex and detailed painting for this artist; furthermore, it is pretty early in his career for a work on such a grand scale. The scene depicts The Nore, the main fleet anchorage (in Monamy’s time) in the Thames estuary off Shoeburyness, near Southend. The principal vessel in this painting is a so-called ‘first rate’ vessel, the largest type of man-o-War of that era and usually mounted with a hundred guns or so. She is clearly the flagship of this collection of boats and she is seen firing a ‘salute’ to honour the commanding Admiral. The Admiral can be seen sitting in the stern of the longboat being rowed towards the flagship with the intention to soon board. As there were no ‘official’ uniforms at that time, and senior officers wore what they liked, it is not possible to say which of the several figures in this row boat is actually the Admiral himself. The Nore has been, and remains to this day, the site of a Royal Navy anchorage since the age of salt, being adjacent to both the city and port of London and to the Medway, England's principal naval base and dockyard in the North Sea. The Nore was a major hazard to shipping, so in 1732 the world's first lightship was moored over it in an experiment, the first one of its kind. Peter Monamy Peter Monamy was born in London in 1681, the youngest son of a Guernseyman. Trained originally in house decoration, Peter Monamy was probably largely self-taught as a marine painter. His style closely followed that of Willem van de Velde the younger. Monamy was working after the van de Velde family and other Dutch painters, who had come to work in England, had heightened interest in shipping pictures and created a growing market for them. He emerged with Samuel Scott as one of the two leading figures in the first generation of British marine painters, although his range of work is uneven in quality. He worked industriously for at least 40 years and left a wealth of paintings illustrating the nation's naval history and recording a wide range of ships of the first half of the 18th century. In 1726, he was elected Liveryman of the Company of Painter-Stainers to which he presented a very large painting of the ‘Royal Sovereign at anchor’ which still remains in their collection. Although his paintings usually depict actual ships, they rarely record specific events as, up until 1739, his career coincided with a long period of peace.

  • The Pool of London
    By Norman Wilkinson
    Located in London, GB
Signed and dated '1902' lower right Contemporary style hand made frame Provenance: Tryon Gallery Private collection In this painting we can we Blackfriars Bridge in the background reaching across the River Thames with smoke billowing up into the sky behind. On the far right the unmistakable, and instantly recognisable, silhouette of St Pauls also breaks the sky line of the city. Finished in the early 18th Century, St Pauls has been a noticeable addition to the London cityscape ever since. This work by Wilkinson depicts 'The Pool' of London, a stretch of the River Thames from London Bridge to below Limehouse. As part of the Tideway of the Thames, the Pool was navigable by tall-masted vessels bringing coastal and oversea goods to the wharves that originally made up the Port of London. In 1909 the Pool came under the jurisdiction of the Port of London Authority. The docks here thrived until the late 1950s, despite suffering from extreme bomb damage during the Second World War. The tall-masted ships that Wilkinson has depicted here are perfect examples of traditionally rigged sailing craft of the time. They differ from modern sailing vessels in that they did not use newer materials (such as aluminium and steel) and have more complex rigging as a result. The term tall ship later came into widespread use in the mid-20th century with the advent of Tall Ships' races. Here, incredible attention to detail has been applied by Wilkinson in the accurate depiction of the various ships rigging...

  • Fording the River Landscape British Master Nasmyth 19th century Oil Painting
    Located in Stockholm, SE
Signed lower right "Nasmyth" leading to one of the whole pleiad of renowned Scottish artists starting with Alexander Nasmyth (1758 -1840). This painting showcases a scene of a landscape with shallow water, where a family is seen wading through a river ford in knee-deep water. The presence of a shepherdess on a high bank, observing the travelers with keen interest, adds a sense of pastoral charm to the composition. One of the focal points of the painting is a picturesque tree that has fallen into the river, adding a touch of drama to the overall scene. The contrast between the lush woodland and bushes on the right side of the foreground and the rolling valley on the left side further enhances the depth and perspective of the painting and superbly illustrates the traditions of the early 19th century British Art...
