Peter Tom-Petersen
Peter Tom-Petersen, View From Brahetrolleborg, Oil Painting

c. 1905

About the Item

This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Peter Tom-Petersen (1861-1926) depicts a view on the Brahetrolleborg estate. Beyond a fence with climbing rose bushes, three men tend to an ailing thatch. Their work almost complete under the glare of mid-Summer. Alongside, a canopy of foliage frames a ‘nut walk’ - a garden path flanked by various nut bushes. Tom-Petersen loved it here, returning often to the picturesque environs of Brahetrolleborg, a castle estate on the island of Fyn. The roots of the impressive Brahetrolleborg Castle date back to the 12th century and it stands amid an estate with various buildings. Tom-Petersen was related to the estate manager’s wife, Maja Elisabeth Cramer, so was assured of a warm welcome. He married Marie Elisabeth Lorentzen, the estate manager’s daughter, at Brahetrolleborg in 1891 and it remained a place close to his heart. Here, we see a view from around 1905, possibly depicting three friends working on a cottage he knew well. Signed lower right and held in its original gilt frame.

This early 20th-century autumnal oil painting by British artist Daniel Sherrin (1869-1940) depicts a rugged heath landscape under the glow of a setting sun. Sherrin was an accomplished painter of landscapes and maritime subjects. He spent the majority of his life in Seasalter, near Whitstable in Kent, where he became a local celebrity of repute. His father, John Sherrin RI RWS (1819-1896), was a painter of delicate still lifes in watercolour and trained by the distinguished William Henry Hunt (1790-1864). However, it’s unlikely that he provided any early tuition for his son as he actively dissuaded the young lad from entering the profession. As such, Sherrin was instead apprenticed to Peter Moore...
