An attractive landscape scene of figures on the banks of the river Severn by Robert John Hammond. A man can be seen steadying a boat whilst a woman and her daughter wait by the bank.
Robert John Hammond was a landscape painter born in Blackfriars, London in 1853. By the time he was 18 he had moved to Sutton Coldfield where he initially became an apprentice watchmaker before becoming a full time artist. In 1871, he married Lucy Banner, the sister of the artist Alfred Banner (1860-1914) at Kings Norton, Worcestershire. They lived at 90 Kyrwicks Lane, Bordesley in Birmingham before moving to 467 Moseley Road, Balsall Heath.
Hammond became well known for his landscapes and rural scenes of the surrounding countryside but also travelled further afield to Bristol, Bournemouth and Sheffield as well as Scotland and Wales. His son Horace Hammond (1879-1966) became a lithographer and landscape artist who used the pseudonyms of A D Bell and J Barclay.
He exhibited widely between 1882-1911 at the Royal Society of Artist, Birmingham as well as at the Manchester City Art Gallery. Hammond’s paintings show a pre-Raphaelite influence, particularly in his rendering of the landscape and use of colours. Often depicting cottages and rosy cheeked children at play they served as a reminder of a life far removed from the emerging industrial cities of the time. Towards the end of his life he lived at 3 Walford Road in Aston.
An example of his work can be found at the Birmingham Museum.
Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.

Robert John Hammond
Robert John Hammond was a landscape painter born in Hackney, London, in 1853. Later on, he moved to the Midlands area, where he became well known for his landscapes and rural scenes of the surrounding countryside. Hammond lived for a time in the Balsall Heath area of Birmingham and exhibited widely between 1882–1911 at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists as well as at the Manchester Art Gallery. Hammond’s paintings show a pre-raphaelite influence, particularly in his rendering of the landscape and use of colors. Often depicting cottages and rosy-cheeked children at play, they serve as a reminder of a life far removed from the emerging industrial cities of the time. Towards the end of his life, Hammond lived near Aston in Warwickshire, where he died in 1911. An example of his work can be found at the Birmingham Museum.

Bredon’s Norton is a village located in the Cotswolds, on the slopes of Bredon Hill in South Worcestershire. The America women’s rights activist Victoria Woodhull Martin moved to the village in 1901 and by 1908 had set up an agricultural school for women at her Norton’s Park estate. The Antarctic explore Raymond Priestley also lived there. Although Bates was living in Surrey at the time of this painting, he would have been familiar with the area after having lived and worked in Worcestershire for some considerable time. He would have also most likely been aware of Victoria Woodhull Martin and the school. David Bates was born in March, Cambridge in 1840 to Benjamin Bates a shoe maker and Sarah Bates. By 1851, the family had moved to Upton upon Severn in Worcestershire and from 1855 Bates became an apprentice at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works in Worcester. There he developed his artistic talent, painting flower decorations onto vases and plates. At some point after 1861, he became a full time artist and made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1863, continuing to exhibit there until 1893. He also exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Suffolk Street and the Grosvenor Gallery. He married Elizabeth Higgs from Worcester in 1867 and they lived at Cherry Orchard, Bath Road in Worcester where their children were later born.
