About the Item

Pierre-Antoine Demachy (Paris 1723 - 1807) Architectural capriccio oil painting on canvas 92 x 70 cm Criticism and expertise of Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri (Rome [...] With regard to this refined "Architectural Capriccio" (oil painting on canvas, 92 x 70 cm), the Roman matrix of its inventiveness is evident, consisting of the inside of an imaginary ruined building, of which it emerges two rounded arches, still majestic as well as being partly ruined, resting on pairs of smooth columns from the composite capitals of complex and bizarre model, in which the various classical styles intertwine. The contrast between the well-preserved large vase, directly inspired by famous models like the "Ludovisi", and the architectural fragments, including an inverted capital in the lower right corner, complete the archaeological-ruinistic exposition angle of the composition. [...] Clearly, the author refers to the taste of the inventions of the Panini, who came to the height of the eighteenth century well beyond the confines of the papal state, not being excluded from his knowledge of similar works of direct followers of the maestro piacentino, or other specialists in the field who acted in advance or in its wake, as Il Carlieri and Roberti, or the various French with Servandoni, immediately exposed to light in this regard and that pursued an address related to that of the "Capriccio" taken here consideration. The "Capriccio" also avails itself of a figurative animation and a landscape background in the light of the arch, which clearly lead back to Van Bloemen - figures and backgrounds are the same in many of his paintings and almost the same in one assigned to his workshop ( v. A. Busiri Vici, Jan Frans van Bloemen "Horizon" and the origin of the eighteenth-century Roman landscape, Bozzi ed., Rome 1974, Fig. 319 and passim) [...] [Giancarlo Sestieri] Pierre-Antoine Demachy was a French painter, born on 17 September 1723 in Paris, and died on 10 September 1807. Active in the second half of the eighteenth century, he specialized in paintings of architectural ruins, in trompe l'oeil and especially in the views of Paris, where he gave free rein to his creativity and audacity. He was the ancestor of the banker Charles Adolphe Demachy (1818-1888).

  • De Wit Flowers Still life Paint Oil on canvas 18th Century Flemish Cupids Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Jacob De Wit (Amsterdam, 1695 - 1754) attributable/ workshop Pair of Cupids with Garland of Flowers Oil on canvas 91 x 103 cm. - Framed 104 x 115 cm. Provenance: Christie's (London, Old master Painting 12.12.1996) lot 82 This magnificent composition depicts two cupids holding a garland of flowers, placed on a fine architecture with bas-reliefs and masks, presumably the top of a fountain. One of the two cupids sympathetically holds a part of it with his hands, while his head turns towards the viewer; the second cupid, on the other hand, must have clumsily broken the thread holding its end, and is sitting sullenly with a torch and a tear streaking his chubby cheek. The work, given its stylistic features and compositional taste, can be attributed to the Flemish artist Jacob de Wit (Amsterdam, 1695 - 1754), or to an artist from his workshop, with his typical triumphal and opulent style, which reveals clear influences from Rubens and Van Dijck, but also from Gerard de Lairesse...

  • Virgin and Child with the Infant Saint John
    By Domenico Puligo
    Located in New Orleans, LA
A masterful example of Italian Mannerist painting, this exceptional panel was composed by the renowned Florentine painter Domenico Puligo. Alongside Jacopo Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino, Puligo is remembered as one of the foremost figures of the Mannerist movement that rose to prominence during the 16th century in Florence. This panel of the Virgin Mary with the Christ child and Saint John the Baptist is a characteristic example of his celebrated devotional images, which grace museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Museo del Prado (Madrid), Palazzo Borghese (Rome), and Palazzo Pitti (Florence), among many others. Puligo’s skill with color is fully demonstrated in the beautifully preserved work. Considering its age, the vibrancy and the sheer range of color is remarkable. The Virgin Mary’s crimson dress...

Oil on canvas, 62 x 51 cm (without the frame) Even if on the background there is an attribution to “Francesco Gessi pupil of Guido Reni” by the bolognese art historian Guido Zucchini (dated 1945), recent studies are tending to add it to the corpus of Girolamo Negri called Il Boccia (Bologna 1648-1718) due to lots of similarities with his style (the pale and warm palette chosen, the profile) The painting represents a lady on profile wearing a brown turban, a yellow clock...
