About the Item

Attributed to John Bradley ( - After 1847) " Portrait of a Lady Wearing Puffy Sleeves Holding a Book ", c. 1830s Oil on Canvas 36" x 29" Housed in a 2 1/8" Frame Overall Size: 39 3/4" x 32 3/4" The Painting has been lined. Minor scratches to surface and frame. In otherwise good condition. Bradley was active in the New York City environs from 1832 to 1847, with the first painting that places him in the United States was an 1832 portrait representing the New York merchant Asher Androvette. This and other of his portraits of the mid-1830s depict residents of Staten Island, which was then known as Richmond Island. New York City directories list him as a portrait and miniature painter working in an area that would now include Houston Street.
