About the Item
"The Clash Joe Taxi" black and white photograph by Allan Tannenbaum. Image size: 9 x 13 inches. The text to the right of the photo reads: "Joe Strummer JFK Airport 1981 Joe Strummer was the cofounder, lyricist, rhythm guitarist and lead singer of the English band The Clash, one of the most influential bands in the history of rock 'n' roll. In this photo, the Clash's front man cranes his head out of a taxi and mugs for Allan Tannenbaum's camera as the band leaves JFK Airport and heads into New York City for what would become one of the most notable events in the band's history,. The Clash had self-booked eight shows at Bond's, a former department store in Times Square. The shows were quickly shut down by local fire marshalls due to over capacity ticket sales by the greed-stricken promoters. The band then demonstrated its integrity by putting on a total of 17 shows to accommodate all of the fans who had purchased tickets to one of the original eight shows. This, in turn, made each performance an intimate experience for everyone. In 2004, 'Rolling Stone Magazine' ranked The Clash number 30 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Photograph ©2009 by Allan Tannenbaum from the book "New York in the 70s.'" This photo was previously displayed in the original Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and comes with a certificate of authenticity and a commemorative plaque to that effect.
