The harsh, grim landscape of the surface of mars is the subject of Kirill Polevoy's black and white photograph entitled "Mars on Earth, Michigan". By bringing the angle of the photo down to the ground, there is an even greater sparseness to the stark landscape. Yet with a closer look, we see the boulders and sand are actually melted snow piles. In his final days, Martin Luther King Jr. stood by striking sanitation workers in Memphis ,Tennessee. MLK had given his famous "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech and the next day Art Shay was on his way to cover the strike. He got word that MLK was shot while en route. He arrived in the city with chaos all around. This photo captures that important time.
