Limited Edition Black and White Still Life Photograph Water Stones #19
This image is Untitled #19 in the Water Stones series.
I have been intrigued by the phenomenon of stacked stones that can increasingly be found in natural areas frequented by humans. Beyond trail markers, they are stacked for the pleasure of creating.
For me, I decided the photographs are not only about the piled stones; it’s a new composition about tension, light, form and time. The tension is inherent in viewing stones that are about to fall. I chose stones with a particular surface where they will stick at the exact point of pre-fall. The stones luminescence and form are part choice of rock and part carefully crafted light that intends to evoke a range of emotions from the spiritual to a remembered pleasant beach day. The third concept is time. Low light exposures often involve lots of time, but the time concept that’s more interesting is in the making of the stones: millions of years tumbling with sand and water to make these perfect props. Tension, light, form and time are the basic ingredients of these photos as it is for many living organisms. Of course, humans benefit from less tension, more light and more time. Maybe that’s another clue as to why we like to stack stones.
The Water Stones series is comprised of 30 images. Photographed with large format film.

Howard Lewis
Lewis started photographing when he was a teenager and continued through film school. He went on to work as an advertising and editorial photographer where he photographed for international clients like Taylor Wines and General Foods. Lewis’ fine art photographs have been in several museum exhibitions including the Michener and Dow museums as well as in major corporate collections. Even while he did commercial assignments, Lewis always photographed for himself as an expression of a specific vision. He mostly photographed in black and white, and studied with O Winston Link, Joyce Tenneson and many others. Lewis developed an interest in creating images related to science and innovation. He was fortunate to meet prolific inventor and scientist Dr. Edwin Land (CEO and Founder of Polaroid) which furthered his passion for integrating science into his photographs. Polaroid materials became part of his way of sketching photographically. Eventually, he left the commercial business and photographed extensively for self-expression. He ventured into parallel initiatives such as new product development (he holds three patents) and creating welded metal sculpture. All these activities influenced his photographs, especially sculpting which became immensely important to his growth in creating his still life images. Lewis’ photographs have been exhibited in galleries and cultural centers internationally, including the Gladstone Regional Museum and Gallery in Queensland, Australia, Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa; the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania; the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science in Midland, Michigan; the New York Center for Photographic Arts; the Black Box Gallery in Portland, Oregon; the Courtyard Gallery in Connecticut; and the Grey & Gove Gallery in New York City.
