About the Item

Edition of 5 More sizes on request This iconic elephant Primo, was with his 50 years one of the last remaining big boys in Africa with huge tusks. After several days following him I had the chance to make this remarkable portrait. An encounter you only have the chance to once in a lifetime. Primo died in February 2020 of natural cause. For years, Joachim Schmeisser has been photographing the last giants of Africa at close range, creating exceptionally intimate portraits of species threatened with extinction. In his new series – The Last Of Their Kind – he focuses on the beauty of creation and its fragile transience. These striking images are timeless works that can be interpreted on different levels: as depictions of a distant past or as iconic memories in a not too distant future in which we can only admire these majestic creatures in zoos. They are both an homage and a final warning - visual revelations that sharpen our clouded view of nature in all its infinite complexity as well as recognizing what treasures we might irretrievably lose. In 2012, Joachim Schmeisser was awarded with the prestigious Hasselblad Master award for his series on African Wildlife. He is considered one of the most outstanding and multi-faceted Fine Art Photographers in the world. He is best known for his exceptionally intimate and touching portraits of the most endangered species in Africa. In 2017 his book »Elephants in Heaven« was launched by the German Publisher teNeues and sold out within 4 months. Particular noteworthy are his large-sized unique prints. By using a large format Sinar camera and medium format cameras he creates prints even in a format of three to 4 meters or more as a unique piece edition. – Photography, Animal, Africa, Wildlife, Nature, Large Format, Tusks, Elephant, Portrait, Close-Up, iconic

Her work has left its mark, and her distinctive style has influenced the visual culture of an epoch. Her photographs are documents and historical records at the same time. Most of them black-and-white, they reveal quite clearly that Lowit is more interested in the inner world behind the glamorous façade. Her pictures smoothly combine glamour and the underlying spirit, countenance and atmosphere, surface detail with depth. This piece specifically documents the friendschip between big names of the 90s art...
