About the Item
NUMEBERED 4/15 , CAPTIONNED , SIGNED ON THE BACK BY RON GALELLA DURING HIS LIFETIME
Ronald Edward Galella, known as Ron Galella, born January 10, 1931 in New York and died April 30, 2022 in Montville, New Jersey, was an American photographer, known for being the pioneer of the paparazzi in the sixties.
ABOUT :
The Times magazine conducted a filmed interview with the author of this shot, known for his many portraits of celebrities. As a paparazzi, he believes he did not invade Jackie Kennedy's privacy by following her. He explains in fact that she lent herself to the game and considered herself a public figure: she therefore accepted the voyeurism that went hand in hand with her status. The photographer met Jackie in 1967 at the Wildenstein gallery, located on Madison Avenue in New York. He describes it thus:
"She had wide open eyes, whispered and did not give interviews, which accentuated her mystical and glamorous dimension. We wanted to know more about her. I knew her address and so I managed, at that time, to do lots of pictures of her."
In 1971, Ron captured the shot known as Windblown Jackie. He says that at that time, the paparazzi were very free, they could change the angle quite easily to shoot the portrait of the stars without their knowledge, in order to show their most sincere expression. But it was also a period when the paparazzi were less intrusive: as soon as a personality asked him to stop taking their picture, Ron complied.

She achieved popularity in the 1960s with the release of her hit single "As Tears Go By" and became one of the lead female artists during the British Invasion in the United States. Singer Marianne Faithfull posing in just a basque, stockings and suspenders on her first shoot to launch her pop career, London 1964, taken the year she was discovered at a Rolling Stones record release party by manager Andrew Loog Oldham. At the time of the photo-shoot, Faithfull had just released her first single As Tears Go By written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Faithfull is most notorious for leaving her husband to be with lead rock singer Mick Jagger; together they were one of the top power couples of the 1960s. She was one of the greatest fashion icons of the 60s and best remembered for her relationship with the Rolling Stones than for her solo music career. Speaking of the 1964 shoot, O’Neill said: 'I wanted to make her look more sophisticated and glamorous. 'This shoot really took her out of her comfort zone, but I think anyone would agree she looks fantastic.' Terry O’Neill is one of the world’s most collected photographers with work hanging in national art galleries and private collections worldwide. From presidents to pop stars he has photographed the frontline of fame for over six decades. O’Neill began his career at the birth of the 1960s. While other photographers concentrated on earthquakes, wars and politics, O’Neill realized that youth culture was a breaking news story on a global scale and began chronicling the emerging faces of film, fashion and music who would go on to define the Swinging Sixties. By 1965 he was being commissioned by the biggest magazines and newspapers in the world. No other living photographer has embraced the span of fame, capturing the icons of our age from Winston Churchill to Nelson Mandela, from Frank Sinatra and Elvis to Amy Winehouse, from Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot to Nicole Kidman, as well as every James Bond from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig and many other of your favorite celerities, models and famous political figures, royalty and fashion iconic names in fashion.
