About the Item
Boy and the Butterfly is part of Sarah Hadley's Story Lines series. In Story Lines, Hadley creates surreal intimate cinematic narratives which blur the lines between reality and fiction. Inspired by Italian Neorealism and French New Wave cinema, she focuses on the tension between exterior beauty and internal psychological complexity.
In this series, she reassembles and reorganizes her own photographs to construct ethereal narratives which speak to the dreams of generations of women whose voices were sidelined. Using the visual rhythms of the natural world, architecture and shadow to illuminate the drama, the images transform into poetic stories, enriched by the use of bold black and white imagery; the soft transparency of morning light bathing the streets or streaming through the misty landscape envelops figures in solitary contemplation and adds weight to the moment.
Sarah Hadley is an LA-based photographer who studied photography at Georgetown and Corcoran College of Art in Washington. Her work is held in museums, corporate & private collections, and has been published in ELLE Italia, L’Oeil de la Photographie, Photo District News (PDN), The Oxford American, B&W Magazine, Harper’s, SHOTS, Lenscratch and The Sun.
