Many ideas of the international avant-garde in architecture and applied arts fields were presented for the first time at the Exposition. The event was located between the esplanade of Les Invalides and the entrances of the Grand Palais and Petit Palais and on both banks of the Seine. Over seven months, 16 million people visited the exhibition featuring 15,000 exhibitors from twenty countries. The Style Moderne presented at the Exposition later became known as "Art Deco," after the name of the Exposition.

It is an authentic square (140 m × 140 m) and embodied one of the first European programs of royal city planning (Plaza Mayor in Madrid, begun in 1590, precedes it).
