Lawrence Schiller is an American producer, screenwriter, and photographer best known for his candid photos of Marilyn Monroe. For almost 35 years, Schiller collaborated with Norman Mailer to create several films together, including Executioner's Song (1982), for which Mailer received the Pulitzer Prize. “I never considered myself a good photographer. I still don't,” he has said. “I thought of myself as a hard worker. My camera was a sponge and I had an instinct that athletes have—anticipation.” Born on December 28, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY, was raised in San Diego and attended Pepperdine College in Los Angeles. After graduating, he held photojournalist positions at Time, The Sunday Times, The Saturday Evening Post, and Newsweek. The artist later broke into the world of film by directing part of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969 and Lady Sings the Blues in 1972. Over the course of his career, Schiller has captured images of several important and notorious figures in American history including Lee Harvey Oswald, Muhammad Ali, and Richard Nixon. He currently lives and works between Los Angeles, CA and New York, NY.

Lawrence Schiller
The themes of celebrity and scandal anchor much of Lawrence Schiller’s diverse body of work, which spans from photography and nonfiction writing to directing Oscar-winning films including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and The Man Who Skied Down Everest (1972). Schiller achieved early success as a photojournalist, publishing photographs of movie stars, athletes, and politicians in magazines and newspapers worldwide. Schiller’s most iconic images capture a nude Marilyn Monroe filming a pool scene for the motion picture Something’s Got to Give, just a few months before her death in 1962. In addition to his memoir Marilyn & Me (2012), Schiller has published eleven books over the course of his career, many with his lifelong collaborator Norman Mailer.

Movement is a series which combines a strong aesthetic point of view with meticulous attention to technical detail. As the title indicates, the series is concerned with giving shape to temporal and spatial aspects inherent in all visual experience. "At first glance, these multi-point visual puzzles appear out of focus or shaken , but in fact they consist of many different and very sharp photographs of the same motif. They are carefully combined through multiple exposures, resulting in a dynamic illusion of being on-the-go. My fascination with multiple exposures began in the 1980's. In my work with analogue photography, multiple exposures would occur accidentally from time to time. Quite often, I found the visual results of these accidents to be both aesthetically fascinating and enigmatic. It is this fascination that continues to inform my work in Movement". - Jacob Gils...Category
