Vincent Longo
Klee Study (homage to Paul Klee) mid century modern geometric abstraction

1964

About the Item

Vincent Longo Klee Study, 1964 Monotype Pencil signed and dated 1964 lower right; pencil titled "Klee Study" lower left 15 1/2 × 5 1/2 inches Unique Unframed This is an exquisite and poignant, signed titled and dated monotype by the accomplished printmaker Vincent Longo, who taught printmaking for years at Bennington College in the 1960s and later Hunter College in New York City. This was acquired from the Estate of Gene Baro, the influential curator and art writer who featured Longo's work in print shows that he curated at the Brooklyn Museum as well as Bennington College. The present work is in excellent condition, though there is an ever so small red speck at the very bottom of the sheet, which would easily frame out (It is literally a dot on the paper, near the margin.) More biographical background on the artist: Vincent Longo studied art at Cooper Union where he learned about Cubism and oriental philosophy. At the Brooklyn Museum Art School, he took a class with Max Beckmann shortly before he died and later studied Louis Schanker, according to the curator David Acton a tremendously influential printmaker who was at the center of the New York "print revival" of the late 1940's. In 1954 he became a regular at Eighth-Street Club and the Cedar Tavern where Abstract Expressionists talked and drank. "We were all closely linked to de Kooning, Rothko, and Motherwell, as well as to Pollock", Longo told the art historian Judith Goldman. "Pollock was the force, in a way that other painters could not be." Like other first and second generation Abstract Expressionists, Longo was passionate about oriental calligraphy, Jung, Monet and jazz. Influenced as a young artist by early Kandinsky and by expressionist abstraction, he would be increasingly drawn to Mondrian, who he says,"had a more dominant influence on me than anyone else." In 1957 Longo became a lynchpin in the soon to be legendary art department of Bennington College that attracted Clement Greenberg and Color Field Painters like Kenneth Noland and Jules Olitski. In his 10 years at this Vermont woman's college, Longo helped give printmaking an academic seriousness and became friends with Peter Stroud and Tony Smith. His paintings became less gestural and more spare and frontal. He began working with grids and with centralized images, some inspired by the mandala-circle within a square and a dot in the middle. In 1967 Smith was instrumental in Longo's return to New York City to teach full-time, again mostly printmaking, at another soon-to-be legendary art department, this one at the larger and grittier Hunter College, with which Longo would remain affiliated for 35 years. In the 70's he began exhibiting regularly, at the Susan Caldwell and Condesco Lawler Galleries in Soho and at the Andrew Crispo Gallery uptown. His grids became increasingly suggestive-of ground plans, for example, and aerial reconnaissance photographs, and forests, and the dazzling possibilities of the design imagination.

  • Rare Albright Knox museum poster (hand signed and inscribed to renowned curator)

Dan Flavin Dan Flavin at Albright Knox Gallery (hand signed and inscribed to renowned curator) Offset Lithograph. Hand signed and inscribed by Dan Flavin 18 × 22 inches Provenance: Estate of artist and collector Rick Collar Unframed Uniquely inscribed and hand signed 1972 Dan Flavin exhibition poster from his Albright Knox exhibition. Dan Flavin hand signs and inscribes it to Paulus Hendrik Hefting, the curator of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. The inscription reads: "Best regards and best wishes to you especially in "diagrams and drawings". What Flavin is referring to is the important exhibition also in 1972, "Diagrams & Drawings" curated by Hefting, at the Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller (Netherlands), which featured Carl Andre, Christo, Walter De Maria, Dan Flavin, Michael Heizer, Don Judd, Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman, Claes Oldenburg, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson. An extremely rare signed poster with a unique inscription to a major European curator referencing an historic Minimalist exhibition in the early 1970s. We may not see the likes of something like this anytime soon! Dan Flavin Biography From 1963, when he conceived the diagonal of May 25, 1963 (to Constantin Brancusi), a single gold fluorescent lamp installed diagonally on the wall, until his death in 1996, Dan Flavin (1933-1996) produced a singularly consistent and prodigious body of work that utilized commercially available fluorescent lamps to create installations (or “situations,” as he preferred to call them) of light and color. Through these light constructions, Flavin was able to establish and redefine space. Flavin’s first solo exhibitions were held at the Judson Gallery in 1961 and the Green Gallery in 1964, both in New York. His first European exhibition was in 1966 at Galerie Rudolf Zwirner in Cologne, Germany; and in 1969, the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, organized his first major museum retrospective. His work was included in a number of key early exhibitions of Minimal art in the 1960s, among them Black, White, and Gray (Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Connecticut, 1964); Primary Structures (The Jewish Museum, New York, 1966); and Minimal Art (Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, 1968). Flavin’s work would continue to be presented internationally over the course of the pursuant decades at venues including the St. Louis Art Museum, Missouri (1973); Kunsthalle Basel (1975); Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam (1975); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1986); and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (1992), among others. A major museum retrospective devoted to Flavin’s work was organized, in cooperation with the Estate of Dan Flavin, by the Dia Art Foundation in association with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, where it was first on view in 2004. The exhibition traveled from 2005 to 2007 to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Hayward Gallery, London; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris...

  • Echolocation Five
    By Anna Kunz
    Located in Bloomington, IL
"Echolocation Five" is a monotype that Anna Kunz created during her visit to Manneken Press in November 2022. The prints in this series were made using oil based inks and paint sticks and hand-printed on Arches Cover paper. Anna Kunz continues to draw inspiration from the ocean; its hypnotic, cyclical movement and sense of mystery, which she has referred to as, “the most abstract space in nature.” This group of works is titled after the principle referred to as Echolocation, used by marine mammals as an extension of sight, to steer space and identify objects. In these works the artist has played with the idea of exchanging the animal behavior of using echoing sound as a means to navigate and locate, with vibrational hues as a way to compose, lead the viewer’s eye into unfamiliar relationships, and to materialize the unknown. Focusing on the elements of simple geometric forms and color, she imbues her compositions with energy through a process of intuitive call and response, suggesting a way for the viewer to enter and navigate the compositional spaces. The saturated colors in Kunz’ vocabulary are both opaque and transparent, choreographed in porous fields of the paper, and lead to symphonic compositional structures. While working on the "Echolocation” prints at Manneken press, the studio was filled with the ambient music of Brian Eno which created another kind of sonic inspiration for the echoing forms and colors found in the works. "Echolocation Five" is a unique monotype, 30" x 27"; a bleed print (the image extends to the edges of the paper). The front, lower right margin carries the artist's initials and date in pencil; the title is on the back. The Manneken Press blindstamp is impressed into the lower left margin. The print is sold unframed. Framing recommendations: float mounted on museum board or floated within an 8-ply window mat, in a quality, contemporary gallery frame. Anna Kunz lives and works in Chicago. Her work is represented by Alexander Berggruen New York; Mc Cormick Gallery, Chicago; and Galleri Urbane in Dallas. Her upcoming exhibition entitled "The Tide" can be seen at Berggruen San Francisco in February and March 2023. Kunz has been awarded numerous artist residencies, including the Golden Family Foundation Residency, Edward Albee Foundation Residency, the Space Program at Marie Sharpe Walsh Foundation and the Roger Brown Artist...
