Thomas Cook after Hogarth
T. Cook after Hogarth - Six Early 19th Century Engravings, A Harlot's Progress

Unknown

About the Item

The complete set of six engravings by Thomas Cook (1744-1818) after William Hogarth's (1697-1764) 'A Harlot's Progress', first a series of six paintings (1731, now destroyed) and subsequently a series of engravings (1732). This set is a later strike of Thomas Cook's reproduced plates after Hogarth's originals. The series shows the story of a young woman, M. (Moll or Mary) Hackabout, who arrives in London from the country and becomes a prostitute. After painting a prostitute in her boudoir in a garret on Drury Lane, Hogarth struck upon the idea of creating scenes from her earlier and later life. The title and allegory are reminiscent of John Bunyan's 'Pilgrim's Progress' (1678). All are signed and dated either 1798 or 1799 in plate. On wove.
