US Naval Aviation Training Division Lockheed Lightning - US World War II aeroplane warbird Aeroplane identification poster, 1943 63x47cm A particularly unusual style of aeroplane identification poster, owing to the very arty images. Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes, this series - and we have several in this series - have a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view. The Lightning is a World War II era American fighter aircraft fitted with piston engines. It has very distinctive two booms and central nacelle with the cockpit. Used in PR aerial photographic reconnaisance, the P-38 took 90% of all aerial photography undertaken over Europe during the war. It was the aircraft of the US's top aces, Richard Bong (40 victories), Thomas McGuire (38), and Charles H MacDonald (27), ace fighter pilots all.
