This is a limited edition (50) digital black & white print of a standing female nude, executed in 17 vector lines. It is part of a series called Haiku, after the style of Japanese poetry.
Haiku translated to English means “cutting”, and refers to two juxtaposing ideas or images. Haiku has 17 “on”, or syllables, and is traditionally written in English on three lines. Using this theme, I have drawn images of female nudes, juxtaposing the colours black and white and using only 17 vector lines.
I am experimenting with the economy of line and how to express an artistic idea that will engage the viewer. Deciding on which lines to include and which to exclude was a challenge. This simple drawing describes a female nude leaning back with her left arm above her head, but leaves enough to the viewer’s imagination to complete the artwork in their head. I've drawn this image with my finger on my iPhone, using a vector drawing app that allows me to control the weight of each line by varying the pressure of my fingertip on the screen.
This simple composition is composed of different weighted lines that lend a sense of rhythm and movement to the artwork. Count the 17 graceful vectors to discover how their number reflect the syllables of Japanese haiku poetry.
The artwork is printed on textured rag paper and shipped unframed to you free in North America.

Michael Binkley is a Canadian professional artist of over 40 years experience. Primarily known for his original stone sculpture work, he is proud to introduce this limited edition series of digital vector drawing prints, entitle "Haiku". He had his epiphany to follow a career in art after witnessing first-hand the work of Michelangelo while Binkley was studying art history in Florence, Italy in 1980. Seeing the Renaissance sculptor's unfinished sculptures in the Accademia delle Belle Arti struck a chord deep in Binkley's soul. It was then that he discovered he could "see" inside rock and he pursued an avenue to learn how to carve stone. He apprenticed to Vancouver, Canada sculptor George Pratt and opened his Binkley Studio Ltd. gallery in 1986. In 2018-19, Binkley and his family worked and travelled throughout Europe. Binkley discovered a portable method for creating art and began compiling his "Haiku" series with a drawing app on his iPhone. His current studio gallery is located in Squamish, BC, Canada and he operates this with his business partner and wife, Michelle Binkley. This is his brick and mortar location, but Binkley is pleased to join 1stDibs to broaden his audience for his "Haiku" series.
