This Andy Warhol rare vintage 1989 Pop Art lithograph print custom framed Paris exhibition poster " Ladies and Gentlemen ( Wilhelmina Ross ) " 1975, is an incredibly special and unique piece to add to your collection.
The exhibition poster print is published by Drouot Montaigne Paris, printed in 1989 in an unnumbered limited edition on the occasion of the " Ladies and Gentlemen " exhibition held at Drouot Montaigne Paris and Bunkamara Tokyo, in November 1989. It features an artwork image of drag queen Wilhelmina Ross originally created by Warhol in 1975 titled " Ladies and Gentlemen ( Wilhelmina Ross )
In 1975 the liberal mindset of the time influenced the drag community to begin boldly embracing their sexuality. This atmosphere inspired Warhol to create a series of art works titled " Ladies and Gentlemen ". Bob Colacello, editor of Interview Magazine recruited a group of drag queens and trans-women from The Gilded Grape in Greenwich Village to become the subjects of the series. Warhol was undeniably fascinated by these performers who represented self-fashioned personas in a glamorous. exhibitionist manner. The result is a series of unusual and striking artworks that are provocative, ambiguous, and direct.
The Ladies and Gentlemen portfolio is one of Warhol's most unique works, although it employs many of his trademark methods.
Rather than using what he termed " readymades ", Warhol took hundreds of polaroids of the fourteen drag queens and trans-women Colacello recruited. This series is one of the earliest instances in which Warhol developed his own source images : instant photos from his trusty polaroid camera. This method later became integral to his process.
Wilhelmina Ross appears to have been Warhol's favorite model for the Ladies and Gentlemen suite of works. He made 73 paintings, based on seven polaroids, 29 drawings, and 5 collage portraits all of Ross. He also created five giant 10-foot canvases of her.
Ross was born Douglas Mitchell Hunter in Kansas City Missouri, moving to New York in 1970. Her name was a mix of the model agency Wilhelmina and Warhol's close friend Dianna Ross. After her Off-Off Broadway work she became a part of Jimmy Camicia's drag theater company Hot Peaches, soon becoming a leading star. In 1974, Ross had the incredible opportunity to pose for Warhol, becoming the primary model for his 1975 Ladies and Gentlemen series. She moved to Puerto Rico in 1974 where she lived for 10 years. When she learned she had AIDS, she returned home to her mother where she was nursed for the last two years of her life, cut too short by AIDS.
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) became a leading artist in the Pop Art movement of the 1960s.
His artistic career expanded from performance art, filmmaking, and fine art paintings. He graduated in 1949 with a BFA and moved to New York to pursue a career as a commercial artist where he won awards frequently for his unique style, using his own blotted line technique and rubber stamps to create his works.
