About the Item

Canadian artist Slavo Cech’s unique sculpture practice is most often inspired by nature. Exploring the language of form and fluidity in the medium of metal sculptures for over 35 years, his works utilize the softness of lines and curves as well as strength and balance to create a sense of intricate movement. “To my eyes, nature provides an infinite amount of inspiration. I like to look at forms such as grass, nests and waves and imagine them as abstract forms.”

  • Mandala Zooxanthellae, Modern Canadian Glass Sculpture, 2019
    Located in Toronto, ON
This work of art is inspired by the tiny plant-like organisms called zooxanthellae live in the tissues of many animals including corals, anemones, jellyfish, sponges and foraminifera. These microscopic algae capture sunlight and convert it into energy just like plants to provide essential nutrients to the corals. When under stress, such as high temperature caused by global warming of the oceans and seas, they will die and leave their host, a process known as bleaching. Alex Anagnostou...

With a vision of paintings that literally break free of the canvas, Blady + Van Mil invented moulage (molded collage) through experimentation in the early days of the pandemic. It became their way of holding onto positivity as the enormity of the crisis was revealed. Collage captured the idea that many small actions add up to new hope. Moulding the canvas – allowing it to rise and flow – gave momentum to that feeling. Also propelling this new technique was the artists’ desire to reinvent the preciousness embedded in the fine arts paradigm. To create each moulage, they purposely cut up many of their own prized works into small pieces. Professional collaborators, married for 40 years, Blady + Van Mil always start with a big idea and play together to see where it might go, accepting both success and failure as drivers of progress. “In a year of turmoil and division, we realized we couldn’t change other people’s mindset, just our own. We began by dismantling our past works – with scissors – and were set free.” Annette Blady...
