Tien Wen
White Curved Cloud by Tien Wen - Abstract ceramic sculpture, purity of forms

2019

About the Item

White Curved Cloud is a unique ceramic sculpture by contemporary artist Tien Wen, dimensions are 41.5 × 30 × 18 cm (16.3 × 11.8 × 7.1 in). The sculpture is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The purity of this sculpture, its manipulation of volumes and forms, and its contrast between curves and lines and angles and curves makes it a quintessential piece of Tien Wen's art. If the shapes are similar to those of a vase, the artist is not concerned with any practical considerations; rather, their attention is solely on the form. To keep the viewer from seeing a purpose or a useful object, Tien Wen even seals the top of the artwork. Tien Wen naturally concentrated her work on pottery at the end of the 1990s due to her early fascination with Chinese porcelains, particularly the colours, enamel and celadons. As the years went by, the artist's love of shapes and the material itself led her to abandon the functional aspect and create more abstract works. The artist just follows her instinct and makes pieces in accordance with the lines that come to mind, giving her a clear vision of the finished product, while looking for the purest of shapes.

  • "Pompeii, " Mixed Media Sculpture
    By Michael Thompson
    Located in Chicago, IL
Based in Chicago, IL, contemporary artist Michael Thompson creates unique kites, collages and mixed media works assembled from material fragments of past and present collected in his travels. In his ongoing series of memory jugs, Thompson adorns stoneware vessels with a kaleidoscope of ceramic shards, found objects, and pocket-sized trinkets he collected over the course of his life. Also known as forget-me-not jugs or spirit jars, memory jugs are African American folk art objects that honor a loved one who has recently passed. Small tokens and mementos of the deceased are gathered and affixed to the exterior of a jug or vase, an abundance of memories that celebrates a life lived to the fullest. Michael Thompson applies this tradition to his own practice, creating tactile assemblages of this and that. Formed in the manner of collage, each jug honors the lost memories of generations past and his own memories of personally discovering each item. With varied sources for materials including Kyoto, Turkey, and Mexico, a great number of the found shards are 18th and 19th century ceramics...
