Barry Davies
Lion

2016

About the Item

This artwork is described beautifully by Art critic and curator Salvatore Russo at an exhibition in Uffizi Gallery, Florence 2016 - "Barry Davies, a sculptor able to state the strength of a regal animal as the lion - a spectacular triumph of elegant details and an intrinsic dynamism are the main features of this artwork, homage not only to the world of art, but to the world of nature and its creatures". As with all Davies' sculptures he strives to portray the perfection in nature. Modelled in clay and cast in bronze this lion stands magnificently on a bronze base. It has been hot patinated using ferric nitrate and finished with a bronze wax.

  • David Defeating Goliath by Antonin Mercie (1845-1916)
    By Fernand Antonin Mercié
    Located in New York, NY
The dazzling David, a prolific subject amongst sculpture artists beginning in the renaissance; this later version by Antonin Merice undoubtedly builds upon the tradition of the David in statuature. Inspired by Donatello's most famous depiction of David, Merice portrays the biblical figure moments after his triumphal defeat of Goliath in a divine, rich brown bronze. Mercie chooses to showcase David placing his sword back into its scabbard, symbolizing the end of his battle with the beast. Standing in contrapposto, the young man is not cladly nude like the story in the bible tells us, but wears a small fabric wrap around the hips and a second wrapped around his head. The skillful bronze casting of the statue done by the Achille Collas foundry, the co owner of the Barbedienne foundry, is superb, with the blade of the sword containing only one anchor point, only a truly skillful foundry could produce this bronze.    Artist: Fernand Antonin Mercié...
