Bethany Krull
Paper Mache chameleon on a yellow chair "Tree-Dweller" by Bethany Krull

2019

About the Item

This playful piece created by New York artist, Bethany Krull, depicts a vibrantly colored paper-mache chameleon with glass marble eyes clinging to the back of an equally vibrant yellow wooden chair. The habitat of this jungle dwelling creature has undergone a dramatic transformation from a wild and growing tree, to a cut, sculpted and stationary chair spotlighting the dichotomy between wild and tame, interior and exterior and real and surrogate habitats. The process of building the chameleon begins with an interior armature of junk-mail paper otherwise destined for the landfill which is then skinned with a unique clay-like paper-mache recipe developed by the artist. The textural skin of the creature is created by painstakingly slip trailing a signature gesso recipe dot by dot onto the surface of the sculpture before the final paint job of electric yellow, orange and teal.
