W.W. Hung
Yearning 2/9 - male, nude, figurative, statuette, bronze sculpture

2018

About the Item

At once expressive, and elegant, William Hung creates dynamic sculptures that explore the human condition. With this intimate piece, cast in a rich bronze, an athlete balances on one hand, his nude, fit body appearing to be suspended in mid-air. The raw powerful athleticism of the gymnast is what captures our attention at first glance. Only later do we realize the figure is blindfolded, and doubly vulnerable. The Canadian artist’s work honours traditional figurative sculpture with a contemporary aesthetic. Available on commission, please allow 6 - 8 weeks before delivery. This work may be exhibited on a tabletop. The sculpture may also be placed on a tall steel pedestal, custom ordered, as viewed here for an additional cost of $700. plus shipping. The bronze is number 2 in an edition of 9. “I use the human body, placed in abstract spatial contexts, to suggest different narratives and psychological states. Many of my sculptural works explore the themes of mortality, determinism (fate), free will, and the tenacity of the human spirit.” WW Hung Hung studied architecture at the University of Waterloo where he earned a Bachelor of Environmental Studies and a Bachelor of Architecture in 1997. After graduation, Hung relocated to New York City and practiced architecture there and in Toronto for several years. In 2004, he became a member of the American Institute of Architects. He also began creating sculptural works in a unique combination of the figurative and the abstract. In 2015, Hung joined the Sculptors Society of Canada. Hung’s work is held in private collections in Canada, France and the US.

  • Arethusa immerses herself in the Alpheus river - figurative, bronze statuette
    By Richard Tosczak
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
This large bronze statuette of a reclining nude with legs outstretched, arms tucked in and straining to sit up was created rapidly in gestures that verge on abstraction. Tosczak is a Belgian-born, Edmonton-based figurative sculptor. He studied philosophy and modernist sculpture, working in steel, at the University of Alberta where a number of the professors had a strong affiliation with Sir Anthony Caro and Clement Greenberg. Richard pursued further artistic training in the Loire Valley with Martine Vaugel...

    By Richard Tosczak
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
The elegant form of a nude female figure is captured in this sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Tosczak. This table-top piece is named after ‘Taygete’ one of the Pleiades--seven sister nature deities (nymphs) found in Greek mythology. She stands, head bowed, arms clasped around her neck as if in deep thought. Known for his beautiful figurative work, this piece retains the artist’s signature highly textured appearance and rich earthy patina. Tosczak’s pieces are first conceived on paper in quick pen and ink drawings. The spontaneity of this approach is evident in the almost abstract appearance of the sculpture. Edition one of eight. “What inspires/informs my work? In a word, observation. I notice things…a gesture…an accident.” Richard Tosczak Born in Belgium, Richard Tosczak studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...
