Ivory Bridal Trousseau Lacquered Satin Skirt Leg Step-In Romper Teddy –XS, 1920s

About the Item

Though it looks and wears like a negligée, this wisp of a garment was an intermediate step between the chemise-style undergarments of the Victorian era and the separate bra and panties we wear today. Called “step-ins”, they made ideal sleepwear and were essential underpinnings for the lean, drop-waisted silhouettes of the 1920s. Especially feminine with its bias flounce legs, this one would make exceptional bridal lingerie. *From the personal collection of department store heiress Estela Jácome.* Lacquered satin step-in with inset lace trim around top bodice edge and leg holes; decorative satin flower detail above left breast. Fixed satin shoulder straps; hand-finished “V” seam from hips to crotch creates “flounce” silhouette around legs. Step-in construction with no closures of any kind; French seams. Unlined fabric: lacquered satin, rayon lace noteworthy: hand washable in cold water; lay flat to dry alterations: none condition: very good with gentle evidence of silk shattering at center front panel (see photos) measurements: neckline opening: 10” across shoulder straps: 16” long x ½” wide (non-adjustable) bust: 33 ½” waist: 33” hips: free leg opening: 35” circumference length: 30” from shoulder, 19 ½” from underarm label: no label present size: no size tag present; comparable to modern size extra small *please note lingerie of this type was worn very loosely around the hips and purposely hung low in the crotch; this is not a defect or the result of overstretching.
