Ceramics such as this one were made specifically for burial purposes to accompany a deceased person into the afterlife during the Ming Dynasty. Burying miniature replicas of furniture, food, houses, granaries, vessels for carrying liquids, animals and a myriad of other objects that were used in daily life during this period were made specifically as grave goods referred to as Mingqi or spirit objects. Burying these objects with the deceased was a practice in China dating back more than two thousand years.
Objects such as these miniature glazed chairs would have been buried with the deceased during the Ming period it was believed that objects such as these would ensure that he or she made their journey into the other life with familiar comforts he or she experienced whilst living, thus helping him or her to make the transition less stressful, ensuring a peaceful transition into the afterlife and less likely to become what the Chinese refer to as a “hungry ghost”, meaning, one whose soul is not at peace and may return to the earthly plan to cause mischief and mayhem for the living.
