About the Item
Monumental clock in gilded and patinated bronze representing Spartacus freed from his chains.
Date of manufacture : circa 1850
Working condition, still maintained by the master watchmaker Carpentier in Lille, France.
Paris Movement.
The model of the Spartacus sculpture represented on this clock is kept at the Louvre Museum. It is the work of XIX Century neo-classical sculptor Denis Foyatier. He made the plaster of his Spartacus in 1822 during his time at the French Academy in Rome (Villa Medici). A royal order in 1828 allowed him to create in marble the statue which ensured his fame. This subject is characteristic of the liberal rise which will led to the revolution of 1830 and the advent of the monarchy of King Louis Philippe.
