Pair of Bronze Sculptures after Jean De Bologne Fortune and Mercury
About the Item
Two patinated bronze sculptures featuring Fortune, the goddess of luck and chance and Mercury, the god of good fortune in Roman mythology. Each divinity is represented with their symbols: Fortune is carrying grains in one hand and a scepter in the other; Mercury is holding a purse. The two are being propelled into the air by the face of an infant blowing upward. The bases are decorated with putti representing Painting and Sculpture. The two bronzes are signed: J. de Bologne. The model is after Jean de Bologne (Giambologna), a French sculptor born in 1524 who died in Florence in 1608.
