Glazed Ceramic Set of Four Bemelman's Bar Ashtrays New York

About the Item

From the famous Bemelman's bar at the NYC Carlyle hotel, unused from old stock and a great artifact from New York City’s Golden Age of Hotels. The Bar was named after Ludwig Bemelmans, the creator of the Madeline Character and whose artwork features prominently on everything from the lampshades to the walls. Very good condition.

    A New York flame mahogany federal butler's desk with drop down (side snap operation) door revealing a green leatherette tooled work surface. The interior with a center door concealing storage and an inside drawer that is flanked by two "secret" panels with string inlay and further enhanced by pigeon holes and short and long drawers. The overall desk presents with string inlay decorated deep top desk over three long drawers in rich flame mahogany veneers. A lovely and refined set of four fine ceramic ashtrays in the shape of a shell; they were hand-molded, then fired in the kiln a first time, then on the white majolica the inner decoration was done with a delicate shaded blue color at this point the objects underwent a second firing, the outer part was then decorated and finally, the ashtrays were fired a third time to finally fix the colors thus creating four small works of art.
