George III Neo Classical Sugar Basket Made in London by Hester Bateman, 1779
About the Item
A very fine George III Neo Classical Sugar Basket made in London in 1779 by Hester Bateman.
The Sugar Basket stands on a circular domed foot, with beaded edge, which is pierced with vertical pails and blue bell drops. The main body is modelled in the Classical vase form, with applied rim. Most unusually, the sides are pierced with a mix of Neo Gothic and Classical designs, including Neo Gothic vertical pails and roundels, in addition to horizontal bands of bluebell drops, identical to those seen on the foot. The front displays a vacant disc cartouche. The arched handle and rim are decorated with beading and this example has a blue glass liner. The basket is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked on the lower section of the main body. This is the type of basket which would have been part of one of Hester Bateman's Teasets.
