Ralph & James Clews Staffordshire Transferware Well & Tree Coronation Platter
About the Item
A blue on white, stoneware Staffordshire ‘Coronation’ pattern, well and tree platter by Ralph & James Clews, 1814–1834, Cobridge, Staffordshire, England. 19th Century.
A well-and-tree platter has a depressed design of a trunk and branches through which meat juices flow into a large depression at one end.
The title commemorates either the coronation of George IV in 1821 or William IV in 1831. A lovely still-life of a bird, a vase, fruit and flowers on a table with a border of leaves and berry fruit. The platter sits on two feet at one end opposite the deep juice well.
Marked Clews stone China, a printed cartouche mark of a garter and crown, and the floral symbols of Britain, the rose, thistle and shamrock.
