About the Item
Imari porcelain gourd shaped dish, Arita, Japan, c. 1890, Meiji Period. The unusual gourd shaped dish, hand painted in typical Imari colours, with panels of birds flying amongst plants, and a fan shaped panel of plants. All on an iron red ground decorated with a dense ground of leafing vine.
The underside, with a band of continuous floral scroll.
Underglaze blue flower mark to the base.
Length – 32.3 cm, 12 3/4”.
Width – 19.5 cm, 7 5/8”.
Depth – 4 cm, 1 5/8”.
Condition – Excellent. No damage. No restoration.

The centers of the cups and saucers each have a stylized gilt kanji for longevity (寿). The bases of both cups & saucers have apocryphal Chinese reign marks for the Ming Dynasty of the Chenghua period (太明成化年製). Black Ships (黒船, kurofune) was a name used for Western sea vessels arriving in Japan from the 16th - 19th Century. The name originated from the very first Portuguese vessels to trade with the Japanese ca. 1543 had hulls painted black.
