M.A. Hadley Pottery Cup and Saucer, Bouquet Blue and White
About the Item
Cup and saucer were thrown and hand painted by Hadley Pottery in Louisville, Kentucky, in Bouquet pattern. The pattern consists of a stylized basket with blue dots/flowers (sometimes referred to as blueberries) surrounded by green dots. Pieces are accentuated by a blue rim.
The Bouquet pattern was created in 1940 and is currently discontinued. It is an earlier example of Hadley's work, done in her traditional palette and easily recognizable style. The pieces are signed on the bottoms.
Hadley Pottery was founded by Mary Alice Hadley, a self-taught artist and trained ceramicist, in 1940s. Her designs found their prominence in the midcentury; she was invited to exhibit in America House in NYC in 1947, and in 1952 she was awarded a Good Design Award by MOMA. Her work is featured in permanent collections of Smithsonian, MOMA, Speed Art Museum, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. After Hadley passed away in 1965, the pottery was run by her husband George until his retirement in 1979, when it was sold to Day family who worked at Hadley for generations. Hadley's original designs and her signature continued to be used by pottery artisans.

Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.

- Haviland Limoges Butterfly Handled Cup and saucer set, 1879-1889, AestheticBy Haviland & Co.Located in Clifton Springs, NYCup and saucer set by Haviland & Cie is decorated in Aesthetic style, combining elements of 3 different patterns. Meadow Visitors butterflies, placed between Bracquemond style sprays of pink roses and blue cornflowers, are accentuated with grey and gold medallions in abstract design. The butterflies and roses are decorated with raised enamel accents, and the butterfly shaped handle is outlined with delicate gold veins, tracing the wing pattern. The cup is 2.12" tall and 3.5" wide at the rim; the saucer is 5.65" in diameter. Set uses butterfly handled blank that was in production for relatively short time; factory decorated pieces are rather rare due to limited supply and fragility of the cups. This set is marked with the blue donut-shaped decorator mark, used in 1879-1889, on both cup and saucer, and underglaze green manufacturer marks: H&C on the cup, dating it 1876-1879, and H&C/L on the saucer, dating it 1876-1889. Examples of similar decorations, utilizing abstract border designs instead of medallions on china with Meadow Visitors decor, can be seen in Haviland China...Category
